Jeep has revealed the 4xe variant of the new India-bound Grand Cherokee as its fourth model to undergo electrification

The Stellantis Group (Fiat-Chrysler and Peugeot-Citroen) recently had its EV Day. It revealed the group’s (14 carmakers across the US and Europe) electrification plans, and one of the companies on that list is Jeep. The Grand Cherokee 4xe (plug-in hybrid) was revealed for the first time during the presentation, and it is now one of the four Jeep models (Renegade, Compass and Wrangler are the others) that are now electrified with hybrid tech.

Jeep’s plan by 2025

The first set of goals that Jeep has set for itself are supposed to be fulfilled by 2025. The American carmaker wants to have a fully electric version for all of its SUVs by that time, alongside their plug-in hybrid versions. It will use the Stellantis Group’s latest EV platforms for this. You can read more about the different platforms here.

The brand wants to ensure that 70 percent of Jeeps sold by 2025 are electrified. Jeep also plans on investing in solar charging stations on trails, so that electric Jeep owners can top up the batteries while still enjoying their off-road environment.

There are a few more features that Jeep plans on having on its electric cars by 2025. The first one is car-to-car charging, which will allow a vehicle with more charge to share it with a vehicle with low charge. Jeep also plans to add biometric recognition and a drone system to its SUVs. The drone will help with scouting an off-road area ahead of the vehicle.

What are the specs of the Compass 4xe?

The Compass sold in certain European countries gets a PHEV (plug-in hybrid) system with an electric motor on the rear axle. The electric motor can make 60PS on its own, and can support pure electric drive up to 49 kms thanks to a small 11.4kWh battery pack. The 4xe variant of the Compass is available with the 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine, which makes 130PS or 180PS, depending on the state of tune. The combined output is 190PS or 240PS, depending on which engine you choose. This engine however is not available in India, as we continue to get the older 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine that makes 163PS.

What about India?

The presentation didn’t have any specific India plans, but by 2025 we should at least start getting the plug-in hybrid variants of Jeep SUVs like the Compass or Wrangler. While these are sold in international markets, bringing them to India right now would put them in a high price bracket without much demand or many sales.
