July 19, 2017: Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) will launch the Jeep Compass in India on July 31, 2017. The bookings for the Compass started on June 20 and Jeep received over 1000 pre-bookings in three days. You can book the Compass for a token amount of Rs 50,000 through Jeep India's official website or by visiting the nearest FCA or Jeep-exclusive showrooms. FCA recently rolled out the first production-spec, made-in-India Jeep Compass from Fiat's Ranjangaon facility near Pune. It will also be exported to right-hand-drive markets, including Australia, Japan and the UK from India from later this year. The India-spec Compass is powered by the 1.4-litre Multiair II turbocharged petrol engine and 2.0-litre Multijet II diesel engine. While the diesel produces around 173PS of power and 350Nm of torque, the petrol churns out 162PS and 250Nm. These engines can be combined with 6-speed manual transmissions or 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearboxes (auto only for the petrol Compass). The Compass features a lot of active and passive safety features and stability control, disc brakes all round, dual-front airbags and hill start assist is standard. It is expected to be priced in the range of Rs 18-25 lakh and will compete with the likes of the Hyundai Tucson, Honda CR-V and VW Tiguan. The Jeep Compass is available in three trim levels – Sport (base), Longitude, Limited (top-spec). There are two more optional trims as well based on the top-two variants – Longitude (O) and Limited (O). In all, there will be five trim levels to choose from. However, the mid-trims, Longitude and Longitude (O), are available only with the 2.0-litre diesel.

Jeep Compass review

It’s been just over nine months since the iconic American marque Jeep made its debut in the Indian market. Its three current offerings - the Wrangler Unlimited, Grand Cherokee andGrand Cherokee SRT - have been positioned as aspirational products with most affordable of these costing as much as Rs 56 lakh, ex-showroom. There’s a new, more affordable, but not any less desirable Jeep on its way - the Jeep Compass compact-SUV.

Across a two-day drive, we will have a chance to get a first impression of what the Jeep Compass is all about. We are driving the top-of-the-line Compass ‘Limited’ variant powered by a 2.0-litre, turbo-diesel engine, with a 6-speed manual transmission and an intelligent all-wheel-drive (AWD) system.

CarDekho Verdict

It is difficult to come to a definitive conclusion about the Jeep Compass based on a short drive and with no confirmation of its price. We expect it to be priced in the Rs 18-24 lakh price bracket, competing directly against the Hyundai Tucson. In a head-on battle against the Tucson, the Jeep Compass’ advantage is that it will be offered with a 4x4 drivetrain - the Hyundai Tucson is strictly front-wheel-drive. Customers looking for more space could also choose from the top-end variants of the Tata Hexa and the Mahindra XUV500 or the base variant of the Isuzu MU-X.

"Initial impressions are encouraging; it looks tough but also welcoming, has a very comfortable and spacious cabin, feels premium with the features on offer, is surprisingly good to drive and is practical too."

Initial impressions are encouraging; it looks tough but also welcoming, has a very comfortable and spacious cabin, feels premium with the features on offer, is surprisingly good to drive and is practical too. There are some bits of the Compass which could have been done better (the dummy buttons on the steering wheel especially), but until we know how it is priced it will be difficult to say if this is indeed the Jeep many eager buyers in India were looking forward to. Jeep has a very small sales and after-sales network in India as of now, which is spread across 36 cities - for those who follow their head rather than their heart, this will be a big deciding factor.
