While the Maruti Dzire has scored a 5-star safety rating at Bharat NCAP, the Baleno secured 4 stars in the crash test
The Maruti Dzire and Baleno recently became the first Maruti cars to be crash-tested by Bharat NCAP. The Dzire scored a 5-star rating in Bharat NCAP, which is similar to its performance in Global NCAP. Moreover, both the lower and higher variants of the Baleno with 2 and 6 airbags were tested, all of which scored a 4-star safety rating. So, how does the crash safety ratings of both Maruti offerings compare against each other? Let us find out.
To keep this comparison report fair, we have only compared the scores of the Baleno’s 6 airbags variants with the Dzire.

Let us now take a look at how both Maruti offerings performed in their respective crash tests in detail:
Maruti Dzire
The Maruti Dzire, in its frontal offset deformable barrier test, received ‘good’ protection for the driver’s head, neck, pelvis, thighs and feet. While the tibia protection was ‘adequate’, chest protection was rated ‘marginal’. The co-driver’s head, neck, thighs and left tibia were rated to have ‘good’ protection, while safety to the chest and right tibia were rated ‘adequate’.
In the side pole impact test, all parts of the driver received ‘good’ protection. In the side movable deformable barrier test, however, the driver’s chest was rated ‘adequate’ while the head, torso and abdomen protection was rated ‘good’.
In its COP tests, the Maruti Dzire earned a dynamic score of 23.57 out of 24 points, 8 out of 8 points and 4 out of 4 points for both the 18-month-old dummy’s front and side protection. Front protection to the 3-year old dummy was 7.57 points out of 8, while it scored full points for the side protection (4 out of 4).
Maruti Baleno (6 airbags)
In the frontal offset deformable barrier test, the Maruti Baleno with 6 airbags provided ‘good’ safety to only the driver and co-driver’s head and neck. All other parts of the co-driver as well as the driver’s tibias and feet were rated ‘adequate’.Protection to the driver’s chest, pelvis and thighs was rated ‘marginal’.
In the side pole impact test and side movable deformable barrier test, the Baleno fared similar to the Maruti Dzire.
The premium hatchback, in its COP tests, achieved a dynamic score of 18.81 points out of 24. While side protection to both the 18-month-old and 3-year-old dummies received full 4 out of 4 points, front protection to the 18-month old dummy was 7.17 points out of 8 and for the 3-year-old dummy it was 1.63 out of 8.
Takeaways
While both the Maruti Dzire and Baleno get a ‘good’ protection rating for both the driver and co-driver’s head and neck in the frontal offset deformable barrier test, the Dzire driver’s pelvis, thighs and feet also receive a ‘good’ rating, which is ‘adequate’ in the Baleno. The Dzire co-driver’s pelvis, thighs and left tibia also receive a ‘good’ protection, which is ‘adequate’ for the Baleno’s co-driver. Other than this, all the other areas receive similar protection in the AOP tests.
In the COP tests too, the Dzire fares better than the Baleno for all the tests involving the 18-month and 3-year old dummy.
Safety Features On Offer
The Maruti Dzire’s feature suite consists of six airbags (as standard), electronic stability control (ESC), a 360-degree camera, rear parking sensors, rear defogger, hill hold assist and 3-point seatbelts for all seats with seatbelt reminders for all passengers.
The Maruti Baleno also gets the aforementioned safety features with the only difference being 6 airbags is not offered as standard on all variants.
