Maruti Jimny Vs Mahindra Thar - Price Check

The prices of the Maruti Jimny have just been announced, and it retails from Rs 12.74 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Needless to say, its prime and direct rival is the Mahindra Thar. While both are very similar at their core purpose of being subcompact off-roaders, they go about it in very different ways and their prices sort of reflect that.

Since the Jimny is a petrol-only offering with 4WD as standard, we’ll only be comparing its prices against the petrol-powered 4WD variants of the Thar. Let’s see how the numbers stack up:

Manual Variants

• The starting price of the Jimny is around a lakh less than the Thar. Its top-spec petrol-MT option is also more affordable than the Mahindra, while offering more features.

• The Zeta variant of the 5-door Jimny comes well equipped with six airbags, ESP, hill hold and descent control, a rear camera, and a 7-inch touchscreen system.

• For less than a Thar AX(O) petrol-MT, the Jimny Alpha offers a 9-inch infotainment system, automatic AC, push button start-stop, alloy wheels, LED lighting and cruise control. In comparison, the Thar just gets the basics: dual airbags, steel wheels, manual AC, and central locking.

• Even the top-spec Thar LX, gets a comparatively small central display, manual AC, just two airbags and halogen headlights.

• Of course, there is the matter of what’s under the bonnet. The Jimny gets the familiar 1.5-litre petrol engine from Maruti’s stable, mated to a 5-speed manual and producing 105PS and 134Nm. Meanwhile, the Thar packs a lot more punch with its 2-litre turbo-petrol engine, mated to a 6-speed manual, putting out 152PS and 320Nm.

• Another distinguishing factor is practicality, which is again better on the Jimny. It has a proper boot and dedicated access to the rear seats unlike the Thar, which makes the Jimny a possible choice for family-oriented buyers. However, both are officially listed as four-seaters.

• With the Thar, you can also choose between a composite hard top and convertible soft top roof. The Jimny comes with just the one fixed metal roof design.

• Another advantage for the Thar buyers is that they have the option of a diesel powertrain, which has been more appealing to the SUV and off-roader lovers. The diesel variants are priced from Rs 14.44 lakh.

• If 4WD is not a priority, then the Mahindra Thar is a more affordable alternative with a rear-wheel drivetrain. You also get the option of a diesel powertrain and the entry-level AX (O) RWD diesel is priced from Rs 10.54 lakh, undercutting the Jimny by Rs 2.20 lakh.

Automatic Variants

• Mahindra only offers the top-spec Thar LX with the petrol-automatic powertrain. As a result, it is costlier than the top-spec petrol-AT Jimny by Rs 1.13 lakh. Meanwhile, the base spec Jimny petrol-AT is even more affordable, at a margin of Rs 2.08 lakh.

• The Jimny is still a more feature-rich offering than the Thar but the latter has a better powertrain with a 6-speed torque converter compared to the Maruti’s 4-speed auto.

• Here too, there is a Thar RWD option with the petrol-AT which is slightly more affordable than the Jimny at Rs 13.49 lakh. As for the Thar diesel-automatic variants, they are even costlier and priced from Rs 16.68 lakh.

Overall, the Maruti Jimny is a more affordable and practical petrol-powered 4x4 off-roader than the Mahindra Thar. But if you want the choice of a convertible soft top, more performance and a diesel engine, the Thar is your pick.
