Production at Maruti's Manesar plant resumes, standoff continues

It was probably a relieving moment for Maruti Suzuki India, when finally it rolled out a Maruti Swift on Wednesday from its Manesar plant after the production halted on Monday over the standoff between management and workers. The Manesar plant is the key location for the manufacturer for its hot hatchback Maruti Swift which has a long waiting list of customers and dealers.

Maruti Suzuki India has been under trouble since June this year when the workers went on a 13-day strike at Manesar plant. The company had witnessed a loss of 13,000 cars and 720 crore as revenue since June. The company dismissed 21 workers on Monday accusing them of hampering production and quality of its cars. This led to a halt in production for 2 days as all the workers were asked to sign a good conduct bond. According to a spokesperson, the company has managed to resume the assembly operations now and rolled out sixty cars, including both Maruti Swift and Maruti A Star. The company has called in 150 adroit professionals and 50 engineers to ramp up the production. They are accompanied by 290 supervisors at Manesar plant taking the total workforce to about 500.

The labour force is particularly agitated with the company's behaviour as the workers who haven't signed the bond of good conduct are not allowed to enter plant's premises and terminated services of 49 workers untill now. If Employee Union is to be heard, the company is taking a revenge on the workers for their strike earlier this year. Shiv Kumar, General Secretary of Employee Union snubs the clause of signing bond with the company and argues that the jobs were terminated without any prior notice or talks with the workers. The employees have not stopped the standoff even if the company has started the production again.
