The Swift hybrid features a powerful electric motor and a larger battery pack compared to the mild-hybrid system Maruti offers in India

  • Suzuki Swift’s electric motor is coupled to a 1.2-litre petrol engine here.

  • The stronger hybrid system helps the engine deliver around 10kmpl more.

  • It claims to offer 32kmpl in the Japanese cycle.

  • Maruti plans to introduce ‘strong’ hybrids in India by 2021.

  • This feature is not necessarily going to be introduced in the Swift.

Maruti Suzuki had announced its intentions to focus on electric mobility at Auto Expo 2020 and it didn’t let us down. Apart from the world premiere of the Futuro-e coupe SUV EV concept, it also showcased the Swift hybrid, a Japan-spec model.

Standing pretty at the Maruti pavilion, the Swift hybrid packs an electric motor coupled to a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a battery pack. Both the electric motor and the battery are much beefier than the mild-hybrid system the carmaker offers in the country.

The 1.2-litre (K12C) petrol engine in the Swift Hybrid delivers 91PS and 118Nm. The electric motor, on the other hand, is rated at 13.5PS and 30Nm. Suzuki offers a 5-speed AMT transmission with this version of the Swift and it also comes with paddle shifters.

In the Japanese cycle, the Swift Hybrid has a claimed fuel efficiency of 32kmpl. If you compare it with the India-spec Swift, which also has a 1.2-litre engine, the Swift Hybrid delivers around 10kmpl more!

With Maruti pulling the plug on diesel powertrains, this petrol hybrid system should come in handy for owners who travel long distances regularly. We believe Maruti Suzuki can get the first-mover advantage by introducing this tech in India as the Toyota Camry is the only other option that is priced above Rs 30 lakh.
