With the rising fuel prices and rapidly evolving EV technology, buying an electric car is no longer a risky proposition, but a smart one. While petrol and diesel cars are still very much relevant, you now have increasingly tempting propositions to go green and make the switch. One very important aspect of this is the per-km running cost of an EV, especially while driving long distances. And to bust the myth of expensive EV charging, here is a comparison:
Petrol Costs Vs EV Charging Costs
For this comparison, let’s consider the petrol-powered and EV versions of one of India’s most common SUVs, the Tata Nexon.
Running Cost Per Km Of Petrol
Starting from the petrol-powered version, which delivers around 15 kmpl of real-world fuel economy. Let’s take a look at how its running costs stack up over a typical 150 km Mumbai-Pune run:
| Petrol Cost (A) |
Rs 111.21 per litre |
| Fuel Efficiency (B) |
15 kmpl |
| Distance (C) |
150 km |
| Fuel Used (C÷ B=D) |
10 litres |
| Total Cost (A*D=E) |
Rs 1,112 |
| Running Cost per km (E÷ C=F) |
Rs 7.41 per km |
As seen above, driving a petrol car will cost you Rs 7.41 per km just in fuel costs.
Running Cost Of EV
Now, let’s go through what a Nexon EV would cost to drive for the same stretch. Here, we have assumed a typical fast charging session at one of the 7,000+ Jio-bp charging points in India, with a realistic consumption figure of 7 km per kWh:
| Charging Cost (A) |
Rs 20.25 per kWh* |
| Energy Efficiency (B) |
7.0 km per kWh |
| Distance (C) |
150 km |
| Charge Used (C÷ B=D) |
21.42 kWh |
| Total Cost (A*D=E) |
Rs 434 |
| Running Cost per km (E÷ C=F) |
Rs 2.89 per km |

As seen above, even with DC fast charging, driving the Nexon EV will cost you less than half the cost of the petrol version at just Rs 2.89 per km!
This results in savings of Rs 4.52 per km, which adds up to over Rs 4.52 lakh over the course of a typical ownership period of 1 lakh kms!

If we charge at home it is even cheaper and imagine we charge it on credit basis as we pay electricity bill monthly. I have clocked 85000km iny MGzs EV and still I can drive 400-410 km each charge
