The new 7-seater VW SUV could be offered with only a petrol engine as the German car conglomerate looks to do away with diesels in India in the BS6 era

  • Tiguan Allspace has been spotted undergoing testing in India.

  • Expected to command a price tag of around Rs 40 lakh on-road.

  • Longer and taller than the regular Tiguan and can seat seven.

  • Likely to come with a petrol engine, unlike the regular Tiguan, which only gets a diesel.

  • Reveal expected at 2020 Auto Expo with launch later in the year.

  • Will rival Skoda Kodiaq, Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner and Isuzu mu-X.

Volkswagen’s Tiguan Allspace has been spotted in India. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the model, the Tiguan Allspace is the long-wheelbase version of the regular Tiguan and can seat seven instead of five.

The regular Tiguan has been on sale in India for quite some time with its top-spec Highline variant retailing for Rs 31.54 lakh (ex-showroom India). In comparison, we expect the Tiguan Allspace to be priced somewhere around Rs 40 lakh (on-road). So, what will you get for all that extra money?

The Tiguan Allspace has a longer wheelbase and as we said earlier, it gets two additional seats that make up the third row. The boot space on offer has been reduced to 230 litres because of that, compared to the 615 litres you get in the regular Tiguan. However, drop the third row in the Tiguan Allspace and you have a boot that can take in 700 litres of cargo. Take a look at the table below to find out how the Tiguan Allspace differs in its dimensions from the regular Tiguan.

The Volkswagen Tiguan sold in India is equipped with a BS4-compliant 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine that makes 143PS and 340Nm of torque. The only transmission on offer is a 7-speed DSG. In case of the Tiguan Allspace, things could change a little. While the gearbox will remain the same, Volkswagen will choose to swap out the 2.0-litre diesel engine with a BS6-compliant 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine that makes 190PS and 320Nm of torque. This will be good for refinement, but we expect this engine to be quite thirsty compared to the diesel. Skoda Auto Volkswagen India plans to phase out diesel engines in the BS6 era.

The interior of the two Tiguan SUVs is expected to be the same although Volkswagen could choose to dress up the Tiguan Allspace’s interior in a different colour.

We expect Volkswagen to reveal the Tiguan Allspace at the 2020 Auto Expo and launch it in India later in the year. When launched, it will take on the likes of Skoda Kodiaq, Ford Endeavour, Toyota Fortuner and Isuzu MU-X.
