Tiguan is another new model from Volkswagen India that was showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo besides Ameo, Polo GTI, and Passat GTE models. Slated to go on sale in 2017, this premium SUV is said to be based on the manufacturer's MQB platform. We at CarDekho, managed to get a few clicks of this vehicle and little information as well through our sources. Here, we present you with some details that might give you an idea of the company's latest offering.
1. Speculated to get latest upgrades like online assistance and traffic updates, which might lead to better driving experience.
1. As of now, we won't be able to highlight the drawbacks of this vehicle as we have very minimal details that we have gathered so far.
Stand Out Features
1. 4Motion Active Control Switch. Likely to be presented in the AWD versions, which will offer four driving modes – onroad, snow, offroad, and offroad individual.
Volkswagen Tiguan was first introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September last year. Now, the Indian bound version has appeared at the Auto Expo in Delhi. This premium sports utility vehicle might sit on the MQB (Modularer Querbaukasten) platform, which can also be seen in Audi A3 and Skoda Octavia. Compared to PQ35, the MQB platform is said to be nearly 100 kgs lighter, which will be a great advantage for the machine. Various sources say along with a lighter weight, it will come with several upgraded features providing information like traffic updates, vehicle status report and automatic accident notification along with online assistance. On the safety front, we can expect it to have ABS, automatic post collision braking system, electronic stability control and dual front airbags. Inside the cabin, it might include an infotainment unit with display screen. This is likely to support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto features.
Talking about the exteriors, this machine looks huge and tall and the build quality seems to be quite good. The creases, we observe on the doors and bonnet, which add to its style further. Though, the spotlight will remain on the wide chrome treated front grille, large headlamps, and alloy wheels as well, which altogether provide a dynamic stance to this machine.
In the global market, this vehicle is available with both petrol and diesel engine options. So, we can anticipate the same for the Indian version too. These motors are said to be more fuel efficient than the predecessors and might have front wheel drive system as standard, while the AWD system will be for top range trims. It is reported to arrive in India through CKD route. As per our estimation, it will be priced somewhere around Rs. 25 lakh and once launched it may compete with Ford Endeavour, Chevrolet Trailblazer and Toyota Fortuner in this segment.
The striking design and style of the 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan deserves all the applause as it does not look boxy as the outgoing model. It is tough, huge and flaunts a sporty look.
This SUV seems to have grown in size compared to its predecessor. It is around 70mm longer, 30mm wider and 33mm lower than the outgoing model. Even the wheelbase dimension is estimated to be around 76mm longer.
On the front facade, we can see a wide radiator grille featuring three horizontal slats with neat chrome finishing. The company's prominent logo is placed right at the center of this grille.
Positioned on either side of the grille are large headlamps, which are likely to house LED lights, and turn indicators. It will also be equipped with LED daytime running lamps, which seem to be flowing directly into the grille.
The bumper looks sporty and houses an air dam as well as a pair of fog lamps.
The modish set of alloy wheels probably of 18 inches will remain the key highlight in its side profile.
The caps of rear view mirrors are seen in body color and they are fitted with side turn indicators as well.
While its rear end is simply eye catching with arresting attributes like an integrated spoiler, and a large windscreen with a wiper.
Trendy tail lamps on either sides of the boot lid further enhance its look.
If rumors are to be believed, it may come with boot space of around 615 liters, which will be nearly 145 liters more than the previous model. And if the rear seat is folded down, the total cargo volume is anticipated to go up to 1665 liters approximately.
Sources at Car Dekho have managed to click a few pictures of Tiguan at the grand event. One glance at them gives us an impression that the machine is contemporary and elegant inside unlike, the tough stance it carries on the outside. We found the cabin to be attractive in a dual tone color scheme, while the dashboard needs a special mention here, as it is quite appealing with metallic inserts and modern equipment.
The steering wheel will come in a three spoke design and might have tilt adjustment function. A few switches are also seen on this column. As we have no official confirmation in this regards, we can only speculate that this might be probably reserved for the high end variants.
At the center of the dashboard, we can notice the stylish console that is further equipped with an air conditioning unit, while the horizontal air vents are well positioned to spread cool air in the entire cabin.
This is said to be a five seater vehicle, which may guarantee you with ample interior space owing to its generous dimensions. Its front seats are likely to have lumbar support and height adjustment facility, whereas the rear one will be offered with split folding function.
An advanced infotainment system might be on offer and is anticipated to come with a 5-inch touchscreen display. Besides, it is also rumoured to get an 8-inch display as an optional feature that may support navigation system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto features as well.
Apart from all these, we can also notice cup holders, assist grips, door trim pockets, power window switches and a few other elements inside the roomy cabin.
As of now, it is offered with both petrol and diesel engines in the global market. So, we can expect the same options to be in the Indian bound version as well, which are said to be more fuel efficient. Along with this, it might arrive in our market with both front wheel drive system for the base trims, while the top range variants might be offered with the 4Motion AWD setup.
According to reports, the second generation Volkswagen Tiguan might be equipped with a 2.0-litre diesel motor. This is said to produce a maximum power of about 148bhp, while the torque output is not known yet. A seven speed dual clutch transmission gear box might be coupled to this mill.
The petrol versions may probably get a 1.8-litre TSI petrol engine with turbocharging technology. It is said to have a direct injection system that will assist in returning a decent mileage. However, the German automaker is yet to confirm its technical specifications, which, we will update you once the actual details are out.
Ride and Handling
It is said to be built on the lightweight MQB platform, which will make the machine faster. Most probably, it may incorporate an independent suspension system on both the axles, which will aid in keeping it stable and under control no matter how bad the road conditions get. In terms of braking, we are expecting ventilated discs to its front wheels and solid discs to the rear ones. Accompanying them will be the advanced anti lock braking system and electronic brake force distribution. On the other hand, it is said to carry a few additional functions like front assist city emergency braking and automatic post collision braking system, which may further improve the braking performance.
The machine looks quite tough thanks to its strong build quality. According to some reports, it may incorporate vital elements such as airbags for driver and front passenger, three point seat belts, along with pedestrian monitoring system. Also, it is anticipated to have automatic post collision braking system, rear camera system, anti slip regulation, side impact beams and many other such security enhancing aspects.
No details of its variants are out yet. But in the international market, this SUV is available in around four trims. So, we can expect the same here as well.
Looks like this premium utility vehicle from Volkswagen, will stand up to the expectations of the masses especially, in terms of its sporty design and eye catching exterior attributes. Its well designed interiors too may succeed in impressing potential buyers. However, we still have to wait for its arrival, only then, we can find out what it has in store to offer in terms of performance. And we will make sure we will the first ones to spill the beans.
