  • Volkswagen has priced the Polo GT TSI at Rs 9.67 lakh while the Vento AT costs Rs 12.99 lakh (ex-showroom).

  • Both models get a 6-speed torque converter unit.

  • Polo is the only premium hatchback to feature a torque converter unit.

  • Deliveries of the AT-equipped variants to begin from September 15.

Back in March 2020, Volkswagen launched the BS6 Polo and Vento and also revealed the prices of the automatic variants of the two models. While only the manual variants were on sale so far, the carmaker has now opened bookings for the AT-equipped variants of the hatchback and sedan. It has stated that deliveries of the two models will begin from September 15, 2020.

The carmaker has equipped the Polo GT TSI and the Vento Highline Plus variants with a 6-speed torque converter gearbox. The Highline Plus variant of the Polo, however, does not get the AT option. That said, the GT TSI and Highline Plus variants of the Polo offer identical features, it is just that the former has sportier aesthetics. The Vento Highline Plus AT is Rs 2 lakh costlier than its manual counterpart, while the Polo costs around 1.8 lakh more.

The base-spec and mid-spec Trendline and Comfortline Plus variants of the Polo are offered with a 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine (76PS/95Nm), while the top-spec Highline Plus and GT variants get a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol TSI unit (110PS/175Nm). Its 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine comes paired to only a 6-speed MT, while the turbo-petrol unit is offered with a 6-speed AT as well.

Volkswagen claims a fuel efficiency of 16.47kmpl for the AT variants of the Polo. In the BS4 era, the Polo and Vento were equipped with a 7-speed DSG option that came mated to a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine. The Polo is the only premium hatchback to feature a torque converter unit whereas models such as the Maruti Baleno and Honda Jazz get an automatic gearbox in the form of a CVT option.

Volkswagen offers the Vento only with the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol TSI engine (110PS/175Nm) that is mated to either a 6-speed MT or 6-speed AT. The AT variants of the sedan return a claimed fuel efficiency of 16.35kmpl. This 6-speed AT gearbox will soon be seen on the Vento’s sibling, the Skoda Rapid.

Apart from the mechanical change, both models don’t see any new feature additions. The Polo goes up against the Tata Altroz, Maruti Suzuki Baleno/Toyota Glanza, Hyundai Elite i20 and Honda Jazz, whereas the Vento competes with the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Toyota Yaris and Skoda Rapid.
