The sub-4m SUV segment has grown rather popular in recent years and continues to flourish thanks to offerings such as the Kia Sonet and Hyundai Venue. Models like the Maruti Vitara Brezza and Tata Nexon have also been given facelifts this year to refresh their appeal. While Kia’s SUV topped the charts in its launch month, it was the Maruti that claimed the crown in October 2020. Here’s a look at each SUV’s sales numbers:

Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza

  • The facelifted Maruti Vitara Brezza took the top spot on the sales chart in October 2020 thanks to a month-on-month increase of 32 percent. Maruti shipped over 12,000 units of its SUV, 366 more than the second best-selling SUV, the Kia Sonet.

Kia Sonet

  • While Kia’s Sonet was the most sought-after SUV in September 2020 with even more units shipped in October, it took the second spot with a tally of 11,721. Presently, it holds the second highest market share, of almost 24 percent.

Hyundai Venue

  • Hyundai’s sub-4m SUV came third with over 8,000 units shipped during the period. Its demand has stayed relatively stable, witnessing the least MoM growth of around 4 percent.

Tata Nexon

  • Compared to September, Tata shipped 881 units more of the Nexon in October. It is slowly catching up to the Venue and commands a market share of a little over 14 percent.

Mahindra XUV300

  • The Mahindra XUV300 witnessed the second highest MoM growth, of almost 32 percent, keeping it out of the bottom spot in the segment’s monthly figures.

Ford EcoSport

  • Ford shipped 4,599 units of the EcoSport in October 2020 and it holds a market share of 9.38 percent. It also enjoyed a month-on-month growth of just over 29 percent but fell short of its Mahindra rival.

Toyota Urban Cruiser

  • The Toyota Urban Cruiser has been on sale for a few months now and has only just been added to the official list. It might have been delayed as it is simply a badge-engineered version of the Vitara Brezza made by Maruti Suzuki. Toyota shipped over 3,000 units of the SUV in October 2020. It holds the lowest market share of 5.77 percent.

  • Overall, the segment witnessed a MoM growth of over 22 percent with the total sales figure standing at 49,005 units.

  • Expect this segment to grow even more with the launch of the Nissan Magnite later this month and the Renault Kiger’s expected arrival in early-2021.
