  • The above-listed variants of the new Maruti Grand Vitara use a 1.5-litre petrol mild-hybrid engine mated to a five-speed manual making 103PS and 137Nm. It is priced competitively against most variants of its segment rivals.

  • Its mid-spec Zeta variant has no real direct rivals and will likely be the Grand Vitara’s most popular trim. Meanwhile, its top-spec all-wheel drive variant is still more affordable than the top variants of the Kia Seltos and Skoda Kushaq.

  • The Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos are powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine making 115PS and 144Nm, mated to a six-speed manual. Both also get the choice of a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine making 140PS and 242Nm, but only the Seltos gets it with a manual transmission.

  • The Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun are also powered by turbo-petrol engines - a 115PS 1-litre and a 150PS 1.5-litre unit. Both are mated to a six-speed manual. Here too, the variants with the more powerful engine are the priciest while the rest are priced similar to that of the Grand Vitara mild-hybrid.

  • MG also has a premium competitor in this space in the Astor. It has two engine options but only the 110PS 1.5-litre petrol engine gets a five-speed manual transmission. Its manual version is also available with slightly more affordable EX trims that miss out on some safety features.

  • Lastly, we have the Nissan Kicks which is still the most affordable compact SUV. It is powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine mated to a five-speed manual that makes 106PS and 142Nm. The Kicks also has the most affordable turbo-petrol option which uses a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine mated to a six-speed manual and makes 156PS and 254Nm.

  • The Grand Vitara mild-hybrid petrol engine uses a six-speed torque converter automatic. It is the most affordable petrol-automatic option in the segment.

  • The Creta and Seltos’ 1.5-litre unit gets the choice of a CVT automatic. The cars’ auto variants are priced similar to the Grand Vitara Zeta AT and Alpha AT. Their turbo-petrol engines are offered with the option of a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic which are the priciest in their top trims.

  • Skoda and Volkswagen offer the 1-litre turbo-petrol engine with a six-speed torque converter automatic. These are the variants that the Grand Vitara petrol-automatic competes with. Their more powerful engine gets the choice of a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, but is priced much higher than the Maruti.

  • The MG Astor also has two petrol engines to offer with an automatic transmission - the 1.5-litre mill with a CVT and a 140PS 1.3-litre turbo unit with a six-speed torque converter. Its base auto variant is the closest competitor to the entry-level Grand Vitara automatic. Astor also has its top-spec Savvy trim with a CVT that is priced similar to the top-spec Maruti here, which comes with the segment-exclusive ADAS tech.

  • Only the turbo-petrol engine of the Kicks gets the choice of an automatic transmission, a CVT. It is pricier than the entry-level Grand Vitara petrol-auto but more affordable than most others.

  • The strong hybrid powertrain of the Maruti Grand Vitara uses a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and a small Lithium-ion battery. It has a combined output of 116PS and a claimed fuel economy of 27.97kmpl. This powertrain uses an e-CVT automatic.

  • This hybrid powertrain is Maruti and Toyota’s alternative to the economy and convenience of a diesel-automatic powertrain.

  • Many carmakers ditched their diesel engines since the introduction of the BS6 emission norms. The Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos are the only compact SUVs to offer a diesel engine. Both get the same 115PS 1.5-litre diesel engine with the choice of six-speed manual and automatic transmissions.

  • While the entry-level Grand Vitara hybrid is priced similar to the top-spec diesel-automatic variants of its rivals, the top-spec hybrid variant is a lot more expensive.
