Hyundai Motor has previewed its full-blown SUV concept, the HDC-2 Grandmaster, at the 2018 Busan Motor Show. At over 5 metres in length, the concept is bigger than its present flagship SUV, the Hyundai Santa-Fe. It also boasts 3-row seats with seven- and eight-seat options. Besides, the concept gives us a glimpse of future designs from Hyundai.

The Grandmaster is grand in every sense: it’s wider with a chubby front profile dipped in chrome, a sharp headlamp unit and large fog lamp housings with integrated long fog lamp strips. It gets prominent skid plates at the front, side and rear, and massive alloy wheels with interesting fork patterns. However, the rear of the concept may not come across as pleasing to the eye, especially those long tail lamps starting from the shoulder line and touching the rear bumper. Hyundai hasn’t revealed details regarding the powertrain that this car would employ.

When launched, the eight-seat production version of the Grandmaster SUV concept will become Hyundai’s new flagship. Globally, don’t expect it to make it to assembly lines before the end of 2019. On a brighter note, it’s not an all-new concept and, thus, shouldn’t take too long a time to enter production. It’s based on its sister concern Kia’s Telluride SUV, which will be unveiled globally later this year.

The Korean automaker will soon be adopting the ‘Sensuous Sportiness’ design philosophy in place of the present ‘Fluidic Sculpture’. The Grandmaster, which refers to a champion chess player, is the second concept to reflect the company’s new design language after the Le Fil Rouge concept showcased earlier at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.

In India, it will be rivalling the likes of the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLABMW X1 and the upcoming Volvo XC40.
