The Baleno is pulling the entire segment up on its shoulders with a YoY growth of 60%

November brought a big bump in sales for most carmakers operating in the premium hatchback segment. Except for the Volkswagen Polo and Honda Jazz, every other hatchback witnessed an improvement in their month-on-month (MoM) and the year-on-year (YoY) sales figures.

Despite entering late, Maruti Suzuki controls a big chunk of the segment along with Hyundai. The Baleno, however, leads the lot as its factory dispatches for November 2017 exceed those of its competitors combined. The hatchback appears to be pulling the entire segment on its shoulders and posted 60% better figures compared to a year ago while the entire segment moved up 29%.

The Volkswagen Polo has come of age and it’s time for a replacement. The sixth-generation Polo has already entered production, and if Volkswagen wants to improve its numbers in India, then we should get it as soon as possible. We're expecting to see the next-gen Polo in India sometime in 2018.

Honda Jazz was another loser showing signs of decline in MoM as well as YoY numbers. The Jazz is facing major competition from its jacked up sibling, the WR-V, which offers high-end features like a sunroof and cruise control. The Jazz has seen better days and the Honda WR-V is stealing a few sales from the Jazz as it provides a car-like driving experience with a small dose of SUV in its genes.
