Nissan has revealed its potential road map for the Indian market, starting with three new SUVs. The carmaker has showcased the Juke, the Qashqai, and the X-Trail. The latter two will undergo testing for market feasibility including the potential for localised assembly and production in India.

However, Nissan has confirmed its intent to launch the fourth-generation X-Trail first. So, here are some things to need to know about Nissan’s full-size SUV:

How Big Is It?

Note: These figures are according to the Australian-specification of the latest-gen X-Trail.

The X-Trail is certainly not the biggest SUV in Nissan’s lineup though it’s larger and a bit taller than typical mid-size SUVs like the Jeep Compass or Volkswagen Tiguan. Perhaps a closer match will be the likes of the Mahindra XUV700.

How Many Seating Options?

Internationally, the X-Trail gets the option of a strong-hybrid powertrain and a turbo-petrol engine with mild-hybrid tech. The 1.5-litre turbo-hybrid can be had with front-wheel and all-wheel drivetrains, the latter offering a dual electric motor setup with a lot more torque.

The three-cylinder engine, tuned to run in its optimal state, is used to generate electricity to feed the battery that powers the electric motor. In Nissan’s e-power hybrid system, the wheels are always driven by the motor. There’s also the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol ICE engine, which claims to offer 163PS and 300Nm.

What Are The Expected Features?

In terms of features, the X-Trail is expected to be equipped with LED headlights, an electric tailgate, tri-zone climate control, electronic parking brake, and 4WD modes. In its top trim, the Nissan SUV offers a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display and a 10.8-inch head-up display. If there’s anything which may not make it to the India-spec model, it would be the head-up display.

Safety is covered by ADAS (advanced driver assistance system), featuring adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, front collision warning, blind spot detection, and a 360-degree camera.

When Is It Launching?

In the coming weeks, Nissan will start its real-world on-road testing in India for the X-Trail and the Qashqai. So we will be seeing a lot of test mules in the coming months. Once confirmed, the X-Trail is expected to go on sale possibly in the second half of 2023.

How will it be priced?

The Nissan X-Trail will be a CBU or a fully imported model, and will likely be priced from around Rs 40 lakh. It will be available in multiple variants with different powertrains and drivetrains.

What Will The Competition Be?

Nissan has stated that the X-Trail will be priced competitively. However, being brought in as a fully built import would price it higher than its localised alternatives. Besides, given its size and expected prices, the Nissan X-Trail will be primarily pitted against the Toyota Fortuner, while posing as a more spacious alternative to the Citroen C5 Aircross, Hyundai Tucson and Volkswagen Tiguan.
