In the rapidly evolving Indian automotive industry, one feature that has, in recent years, caught most buyers’ fancy is ADAS or Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, which have truly revolutionised the levels of safety within cars.

Tata SUVs With ADAS

Tata Motors has established one of the most extensive ADAS-equipped SUV portfolios in the mainstream market. The technology is available in the higher variants of nearly all its SUV portfolio.

Models with ADAS include:

ADAS Highlights

All Tata SUVs with this technology feature a comprehensive Level 2 ADAS suite that relies on both a front-facing radar and a camera. The feature list is extensive, including adaptive cruise control ACC), autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and forward collision warning (FCW) to alert the driver of an impending crash.

For highway driving, features like Lane keep assist (LKA) and lane departure warning (LDW) help if the car drifts away from the lane unintentionally. The system also includes traffic sign recognition (TSR), blind spot detection (BSD), rear cross traffic alert (RCTA), and high beam assist (HBA). Select models also add rear collision warning (RCW) and lane change alert (LCA) for better situational awareness.

Mahindra SUVs With ADAS

Mahindra has made significant strides in integrating ADAS into its lineup over the last few years. The technology is now a key feature across its conventional ICE SUVs and its next-generation 'born-electric' models, with the latter offering an even more advanced system.

Models with ADAS:

Mahindra employs a radar-and-camera system to deliver Level-2 ADAS on its ICE models like the XUV 3XO and XUV 7XO. However, its upcoming INGLO-based electric SUVs, the BE 6, XEV 9e, and XEV 9s pack in the upgraded Level-2+ ADAS suite. This more advanced system uses added radar sensors, surround-view cameras, and ultrasonic sensors.

The standard Level-2 suite includes functions like adaptive cruise control (ACC), automatic emergency braking (AEB), and lane keep assist (LKA). The Level-2+ system on the electric SUVs adds enhanced capabilities. These include superior lane centring, Auto Lane Change Assist for safer overtakes on highways, and emergency steering assist (ESA) to help avoid obstacles. Higher variants of the bigger eSUVs also feature auto park assist (APA).

Hyundai SUVs With ADAS

Hyundai has also been providing ADAS features in a few of their models, like the Venue, Creta and the Verna in the price bracket. Despite still being a bit sensitive in some conditions, this is among the few foreign manufacturers who are providing close-to-usable ADAS systems in their Indian portfolio.

The Hyundai SmartSense suite provides Level 2 ADAS functionality using a combination of a front radar and a camera. The package is comprehensive, offering Smart Cruise Control with Stop Go, a feature particularly useful in city traffic as it can bring the car to a full stop and start again automatically. It also includes Forward Collision Avoidance Assist, Lane Following Assist to keep the SUV centred, and Lane Keep Assist.

For added safety during lane changes and reversing, the system provides Blind Spot Collision Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Collision Avoidance Assist. Other convenience and safety features are Safe Exit Warning, which alerts passengers to approaching traffic before they open their doors, Driver Attention Warning, and High Beam Assist. The upcoming Creta Electric is stated to have software refinements that improve the system's detection capabilities in urban environments.

Kia SUVs With ADAS

Kia offers ADAS across its SUV range with a tiered approach. Its entry-level models receive a foundational safety suite, while its newer, more premium offerings are equipped with a more comprehensive package.

The Kia Sonet features a camera-based Level-1 ADAS system. This setup provides essential safety functions like Forward Collision Avoidance Assist, Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, and High Beam Assist, offering a solid safety net for its segment.

The newer Syros and its electric counterpart, the Syros EV, upgrade to a more capable radar-and-camera-based Level-2 ADAS system. This adds several key features for enhanced convenience and safety, including Smart Cruise Control for automated speed and distance management on highways, Lane Following Assist for better lane centring, Blind Spot Collision Warning, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. A notable addition is Junction Turning Assist, which can help prevent collisions when turning at an intersection.

MG SUVs With ADAS

MG Motor India was a pioneer in democratising ADAS technology in India, with its introduction in the Astor. The brand continues to offer a robust set of driver assistance features across its SUV and crossover lineup.

Models with ADAS:

MG's ADAS package is a Level-2 system that integrates data from a front radar and camera. The suite includes Adaptive Cruise Control and a useful Traffic Jam Assist function, which helps manage speed and steering in slow-moving, congested traffic. Core safety features like Automatic Emergency Braking and Forward Collision Warning are standard.

The system also offers Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, and a Speed Assist System that can recognise speed limit signs and alert the driver. Intelligent Headlamp Control and Blind Spot Detection are also part of the package. The Windsor Pro crossover further builds on this with additional software refinements aimed at improving comfort during long highway drives.

Maruti Suzuki SUVs With ADAS

Maruti Suzuki has recently entered the game of ADAS technology, and it is now available on select SUV models in different levels.

Maruti's ADAS system uses a radar paired with a front camera to enable Level-2 autonomous assistance. The feature set includes adaptive cruise control (ACC), pre-collision assist (PCA), and lane keep assist (LKA). The package also includes automatic high beam and road sign recognition (RSR).

Recently, the Brezza facelift also includes features like blind spot monitoring (BSM), rear cross traffic alert (RCTA), and safe exit assist (SEA), significantly enhancing the safety bubble around the vehicle in both city and highway conditions.

CarDekho Says...

Using ADAS in our road conditions needs to be with extra care and caution. Since Indian road conditions are unpredictable at any given time and place, being fully in control and maintaining active awareness is still key for your and other road user’s safety. ADAS features like auto emergency braking (AEB) have caused accidents on our roads and it is essential to undertsand that this technology is still evolving. With more time and data to process, manufacturers will eventually develop ADAS systems in their cars which will be better adapted for the traffic conditions in India.

So do try them on test drives and take decisions if they suit your requirements.
