Mercedes-Benz is all set to revise its current nomenclature early next year. And if this new report is to believed than the first vehicle to arrive with the new badging would be the soon-to-be-updated third generation M-Class. Which will now wear a GLE-Class moniker. Earlier it was rumoured that the German carmaker can name the M-Class as the MLC or ML Coupe, but this new development suggests that the SUV shall be called GLE Coupe, where 'E' is a reference to the similarly-sized E-Class family.

Previewed by the Concept Coupe SUV (pictured above) is a crossover-coupe version, that will now be called the GLE-Class Coupe, and would compete against the likes of BMW X6 This nomenclature change is somehow same as rival brand Audi's mid-1990s renaming spree, which saw the Audi 80 converting into A4 and the Audi 100 into A6. Broadly, these new GLE and GLE Coupe monikers are a part of Mercedes' strategy to make its vast and cluttered line-up a bit clearer.

This new move of renaming, will also affect the next-generation GLK-Class, which is said to be shifted to GLC-Class now, to align it with the brand's C-Class. The GLC-Class is expected to hit the showrooms late next year or early 2016, and if its coupe also arrives in the market, then it will most likely be called the GLC-Class Coupe.

Furthermore, the GL-Class is also expected to be re-badged as GLS-Class, to align it with the luxury S-Class family. While it’s likely the G-Class will keep its name, due to the iconic status it enjoys. And not to forget, the GLA-Class, aligned with A-Class hatch.
