Maruti Suzuki Ertiga BS6 Diesel Spied Testing

The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga MPV is currently available with a set of 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines and CNG variant too. While the petrol engine is already BS6 compliant, the BS4 diesel engine is due to be discontinued. Now, a camouflaged version of Maruti’s MPV has been spied testing a BS6-compliant diesel engine.

Though the carmaker has not deviated from its announcement to discontinue diesel models altogether in the BS6 era, it seems larger models could continue to get a diesel engine. The spied Ertiga featured the DDiS diesel badge and it also had a sticker indicating that it was running a BS6 emissions test.

Recently, the Maruti S-Cross compact SUV was also spotted running an emissions test with a 1.6-litre diesel badge. The Ertiga’s 1.5-litre diesel was developed inhouse by Maruti Suzuki and is tuned to produce 95PS of power and 225Nm of torque while mated to a 6-speed manual. It is possible that the Maruti MPVs, both Ertiga and XL6, could get the new Fiat-sourced BS6 1.6-litre diesel.

A BS6 diesel engine could see prices of diesel variants increasing by up to Rs 1 lakh. The Maruti XL6 is a petrol-only offering as of now and is priced between Rs 9.79 lakh and Rs 11.46 lakh while the diesel-powered Ertiga is priced between Rs 9.87 lakh and Rs 11.21 lakh (all prices are ex-showroom Delhi).
