The Eeco has gone through two updates in the past six months to bring it in line with new safety norms

  • The Maruti Eeco has received a bump in price due to the structural updates.

  • It now complies with the latest crash test norms.

  • Earlier this year, Maruti gave the MPV a driver airbag, ABS with EBD, seatbelt reminder, high speed alert system and rear parking sensors.

  • Currently, the Eeco uses a BS4 engine. However, it’s expected to be updated to meet upcoming BS6 norms soon.

Indian carmaker Maruti Suzuki has updated its most basic people-mover, the Eeco, to comply with the latest safety norms, which has led to an increase in its price. After the last update, the Eeco was priced between Rs 3.52 lakh for the base variant to Rs  6.55 lakh (both ex-showroom New Delhi) for the Eeco Care model. The latest update has bumped the price to Rs 3.61 lakh for the base variant to Rs 6.61 lakh (both ex-showroom New Delhi) for the top-spec variant.

The new update entails an updated structure, allowing the Eeco to meet the latest crash test norms that came into effect on 1 October, 2019. The year 2019 has seen multiple new norms for passenger vehicles come into play, starting with 1 April, 2019, when a driver airbag, ABS with EBD, high speed alert system, rear parking sensors and seatbelt reminder became mandatory on all new cars sold in India. This was the update that was responsible for the discontinuation of the Gypsy and Omni.

The Eeco currently uses a BS4 compliant engine that runs on petrol and CNG. Given the fact that Maruti hasn’t discontinued the Eeco yet, we expect the carmaker to update the MPV’s engine to meet upcoming BS6 emission regulations soon. The new emission norms will come into play starting 1 April, 2020. Naturally, prospective customers can expect yet another price hike once the Eeco receives the necessary updates required to meet the new emission norms.
