Tata Aeris

Tata has just launched its new entry-level sedan (and the only sedan in its portfolio), the Tata Aeris. It comes as a replacement for the outgoing Tata Tigor, and while it is not exactly a completely new product, Tata has made enough changes to make it a clear distinction.

The Tata Aeris gets modern styling and premium features derived from the manufacturer's other models, and it competes with rivals such as the Maruti Dzire, Honda Amaze, and the Hyundai Aura. Here is everything you need to know about the new Tata Aeris.

The Tata Aeris follows the design language of Tata’s newer models(check it out here in detailed images), and a lot of the inspiration has come from the Tiago hatchback, which was facelifted a while back. 

Upfront, the Aeris gets sleek LED headlamps with LED DRLs, which are housed in a single panel with a gloss black grille in between. This strip also houses the Tata logo and resembles the nose of the Tata Tiago. It also protrudes a little outwards over the lower section of the face.

Below this strip is a chunky body coloured panel which connects with the bumper towards the edges, forming a C-shaped design. Between the panel and the slim bumper, you get the grille finished in black.

In profile, the silhouette resembles the design of the Tigor. You get a blacked-out B-pillar and gloss black ORVMs. There is no chrome here, but Tata does offer 15-inch dual-tone alloy wheels that give it an upmarket look. You also get slim wheel arches made from recycled materials.

At the back, you get end-to-end connected LED tail lamps enclosed in a thick red panel. This panel also houses the Tata logo in the middle, similar to the gloss black panel upfront. You also get a shark fin antenna, a roof-mounted spoiler, a small spoiler bump on the boot lid, a slim body coloured bumper, and reflectors placed vertically on the sides. See how different the Aeris looks when compared to the outgoing Tigor in our detailed old vs new story. 

The Tata Aeris is offered with 6 colour options: Dandeli Drizzle, Nitro Crimson, Dune Glow, Daytona Grey, Pure Grey, and Pristine White. Check here variant-wise colours availability in our detailed story.

Inside, the Aeris gets the same cabin design which we have seen in the facelifted Tiago and Tiago EV; however, it is finished in a lighter theme. The dashboard gets a beige finish on its simple and minimalistic design. The AC vents are slim, and Tata has added its new two-spoke steering wheel with a matte finish.

The dashboard, along with the door pads get soft touch fabric padding for a more premium look. The seats are also covered in dual-tone fabric upholstery, and you get solid physical controls for the climate control to make the cabin more ergonomic and practical. 

For an ideal driving position, the driver gets a 6-way adjustable seat, tilt adjustment in the steering wheel, and the occupants also get a centre armrest for a more relaxed position. Rear passengers get an armrest and a middle headrest, along with rear AC vents and charging ports for convenience.

When it comes to features, Tata has left no stone unturned. You get all the basics like push-button start/stop, all power windows, electrically adjustable and foldable ORVMs, keyless entry, steering-mounted controls, automatic climate control with rear AC vents, and cruise control. For a more comfortable experience, the Aeris also comes with ventilated front seats (segment-first).

You also get a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system which runs smoothly, has crisp graphics, and supports wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. This screen is paired with a 6-speaker sound system which offers a basic sound experience.

Next to the touchscreen is a semi-digital driver’s display. The corners are fixed gauges for fuel level and RPMs, but the design makes it look consistent with the touchscreen. 

You also get a wireless phone charging pad in the centre console. There is space to keep two phones, as there are two trays, but only one of them is the wireless charger.

In terms of passenger safety, you get all the basics like 6 standard airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability program (ESC), a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), hill hold assist, rear parking sensors, and ISOFIX child seat anchors.

It also comes with a 360-degree camera, which has great camera quality and works well even in low-light conditions. This setup also has a blind spot monitor, the feed of which is displayed on the touchscreen as soon as you indicate.

The Tata Aeris has not been crash-tested yet, but since it is based on the platform of the Tigor, which got a 4-star crash test rating from Global NCAP, we can expect it to be better now. That’s because the Tigor was tested with dual airbags, whereas the Aeris gets 6 airbags, across all variants. 

The Tata Aeris has a boot space of 419 litres with all seats up. The rear seats also get 60:40 split-folding functionality that further expands this space.

The Tata Aeris continues to offer the same powertrain options which were available with the outgoing Tigor. These include a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated (NA) petrol engine, available with both manual and automatic manual transmissions (AMT). You can also opt for this engine with a factory-fitted CNG kit, which, like other Tata cars, is offered with a dual-cylinder setup and with an AMT transmission, too. The standard petrol engine is good enough for your daily commutes and occasional highway runs, and offers a pretty relaxed driving experience. However, if you want a lower running cost, you can opt for the CNG variants, but you’ll have to compromise a little on highway performance. The new Tata Aeris is available in five variants: Smart, Pure, Pure +, Creative, and Accomplished. These variants are offered with petrol and CNG powertrains, with both manual and AMT transmissions on all variants except the base Smart.

Tata Aeris Smart

• Available with petrol and CNG powertrains with a 5-speed manual transmission.

• Gets 14-inch steel wheels without wheel cover, Connected tail lamps and a dual-tone interior.

• The cabin gets premium-looking greyish-white fabric seats with under-thigh support, a two-spoke steering wheel finished in matt and a 5-inch digital instrument cluster.

• Features include tilt-adjustable steering, manual air-conditioning, rear seat headrests, rear parking sensors and steering-mounted audio controls.

• Other equipment includes all four power windows, electrically adjustable ORVMs with turn indicators, a day/night IRVM and Bluetooth audio.

• Safety features include six airbags, ABS with EBD and ESC, ISOFIX child-seat mounts and three-point seat belts with reminders for all seats.

Tata Aeris Pure

• Available with petrol and CNG powertrains with both manual and AMT transmission options.

• Gets 14-inch wheels with wheel covers and body-coloured door handles.

• Additional features include an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, four speakers, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 65W front Type-C charger.

• You also get a height-adjustable driver seat.

• Safety features include a reverse parking camera, ESP with traction control, hill-hold control, tyre pressure monitoring system and a rear defogger.

Tata Aeris Pure Plus

• It is equipped with 14-inch Hyperstyle wheels (i.e., stylised wheel covers) on CNG variants, while petrol variants get 15-inch Hyperstyle wheels.

• Features include a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, four speakers,  and a 65W front Type-C charger.

• The cabin gets a fabric-upholstered front armrest with storage, rear AC vents and a rear centre armrest with cupholders.

• You also get cruise control, a shark-fin antenna and vanity mirrors on the co-driver side.

• Safety features are carried forward from the Pure variant.

Tata Aeris Creative

• This variant is equipped with LED headlamps and DRLs, LED connected tail lamps and 15-inch alloy wheels on petrol variants, whereas CNG variants continue to get 14-inch Hyperstyle wheels.

• The feature list includes automatic climate control, auto headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, auto-folding ORVMs and a one-touch driver-side power window.

• The cabin continues with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, two tweeters, chrome door handles and a cooled glovebox.

• Safety feature additions include a 360-degree camera with a blind-spot monitor and passive entry, and push-button start/stop.

Tata Aeris Accomplished

• Gets a dual-tone black roof, LED fog lamps and additional chrome exterior detailing.

• The cabin gets leatherette seats and ventilated front seats.

• Additional features include dual smartphone trays with one wireless charging pad, a dashcam recorder, iRA connected car tech with 35+ features, a 65W rear Type-C charger and USB charging.

• You also get seatback pockets, one-touch down windows, adjustable front headrests and a leatherette-upholstered front armrest with storage.

• The safety equipment includes the features carried over from the Creative variant, along with the dashcam recorder.

• Go for the Pure variant if you want to keep the price in check. It gets the essential features along with an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless connectivity, a reverse camera and the option of CNG or AMT and even CNG AMT.

• The Pure Plus variant adds features such as a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen, rear AC vents, cruise control, a rear centre armrest and additional safety equipment, making it the variant to consider if you want more features without going all the way to the top.

• Go for the Creative variant if you want the additional exterior, comfort and safety features, including LED lighting, automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers, a 360-degree camera and a blind-spot monitor.

The Tata Tigor lost its relevance when it did not get timely updates, and it became outdated compared to its competition, which started to offer a much more premium experience. Tata plans to change that with the new Aeris, and given the holistic package of premiumness, tech, and modernity it comes with, the Tata Aeris actually has a good chance of success.
