The next iteration of the Hyundai i20 has been spied testing in India and looks similar to the one spied in Europe. The latest sighting has revealed some new features of the 2020 i20, including the addition of a sunroof.
None of the premium hatchbacks sold today come equipped with a sunroof and the new generation i20 could be the first to do so. An earlier peek at the interior of the Euro-spec model revealed a fully digital instrument cluster and an 8-inch freestanding touchscreen infotainment system above the new dashboard.
Hyundai will be offering the new i20 with the BS6 version of the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine which debuted on the Venue. In the sub-compact SUV, it is tuned to produce 120PS and 172Nm, mated to a 6-speed manual with the option of a 7-speed DCT automatic. Other engine options are likely to include the updated 1.2-litre petrol engine that produces 83PS and 115Nm.
Since Hyundai will be discontinuing the 1.4-litre diesel engine in the BS6 era, the new-gen i20 is expected to get the 1.5-litre diesel unit from the Kia Seltos but in a detuned state. In the Seltos, this engine produces 115PS and 250Nm with a 6-speed manual and choice of a 6-speed AT as well.
The new-gen Hyundai i20 is expected to look sharper than before with a prominent new grille. It will continue to rival the Maruti Baleno/Toyota Glanza, Honda Jazz and Volkswagen Polo. The current Hyundai Elite i20 is priced between Rs 5.52 lakh and Rs 9.34 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) and the new model is expected to charge a premium over that.
