Renault Kwid Undergoes Global NCAP Crash Test

Renault’s Kwid is one of the seven cars that have undergone the crash test conducted by the global New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP). We had earlier reported that the agency will conduct a third round of tests on Indian models under the 'Safer Cars for India' campaign after their less-than-impressive performance in 2014.

The results are to be announced today and sources say that Renault’s offering has not scored a very good rating. However, the company has already started implementing structural reforms in its car and that should enhance the score of the automobile. The Datsun redi-GO is also based on the CMF-A platform that is used by the Kwid and it will be interesting to see how it fares in the test. The carmaker has equipped the hatch with an optional driver airbag to increase the safety level.

It is important to note that global NCAP had announced the results of its crash tests for India’s five most popular models – the Maruti Alto 800, Hyundai i10, Ford Figo, Volkswagen Polo and the Tata Nano – in 2014, and all of them had scored a zero rating. Though Volkswagen immediately took corrective steps and introduced two airbags in the Polo (resulting in a four-star rating for the car), it led to widespread criticism of the safety of Indian cars in general.

We hope the results are more encouraging this time, given the effort put in by various carmakers, and global NCAP itself, to improve the safety of cars.
