  • It remains to be seen whether these cars will get BS6 engines with this update.

  • A new BS6 1.0-litre turbo-petrol likely to be introduced as a replacement for the 1.2-litre TSI.

  • VW has not yet confirmed if the 1.5-litre diesel engine will get BS6 updates.

  • Prices expected to increase marginally.

Volkswagen has confirmed that a facelift for the Polo and the Vento will be launched on 4 September. The cars were spied earlier this year without camouflage while shooting for a commercial.

The new Polo will feature a honeycomb mesh grille and a revised airdam up front, similar to the limited-run GTI. The updated tail lamps and rear bumper will give the Polo a fresh avatar on the outside.

The Vento facelift is also expected to get similar cosmetic updates, including new side skirts that give the sedan a sportier approach. Internally, the Polo and Vento are likely to retain the same cabin albeit with certain cosmetic updates.

The Polo is expected to be offered with the same naturally aspirated 1.0-litre petrol engine which is rated at 76PS and 95Nm, mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The Polo GT TSI and Vento TSI, on the other hand, could share VW’s upcoming 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine instead of the 1.2-litre TSI and 1.6-litre MPI (on offer with the sedan) engines currently on offer. However, if VW plans to continue with BS4 engines and introduce BS6 compliant units closer to the deadline (April 2020), then these cars could carry forward the existing engines.

It is yet to be seen if the 1.5-litre diesel engines of both the Polo and the Vento will be ditched or updated to meet the BS6 emission norms. At present, the Polo is priced from Rs 5.71 lakh to Rs 9.72 lakh, while the Vento’s price ranges from Rs 8.64 lakh to Rs 14.34 lakh (ex-showroom India). Expect the cars to carry an inflated price tag over the versions currently on sale.

Upon launch, the new Polo will continue its rivalry with the Hyundai i20, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Honda Jazz and Toyota Glanza. The Vento facelift will take on mid-size sedans like the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Skoda Rapid and Toyota Yaris.
