The Toyota Glanza is only offered in two variants. So picking one shouldn’t be too tough, or is it?

Toyota has launched the Glanza in India with prices starting from Rs 7.22 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) onwards. The premium Toyota hatchback, which is essentially a rebadged version of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, is available in two variants - G and V - and gets two BS6 petrol engine options.

While both engines have a displacement of 1200cc, one of them (1.2-litre Dual Jet Dual VVT from Baleno) is available with a mild-hybrid setup. The other one is the all too familiar 1.2-litre VVT engine that not only powers the Baleno but a host of other Marutis as well. While both variants are offered with the choice of a CVT (auto) or a manual transmission, the G variant with the manual gearbox is only available with the mild-hybrid engine. This engine is not on offer on the V variant.

So which variant and engine should you pick? Before we get to that, here’s a list of exterior colour options and the standard set of safety features that’s on offer with the Glanza.

Toyota Glanza G: The variant that has it all.

Variant

Price

G MT (90PS engine with mild hybrid)

Rs 7.22 lakh

G CVT (83PS engine)

Rs 8.3 lakh

Exteriors: LED projector headlamps with light guides, LED rear combination lamp, 16-inch alloy wheels, chrome grille, body coloured ORVMs and door handles, electrically folding ORVM with turn indicators and roof antenna.

Interiors: Chrome inside door handles and parking brake tip, front center armrest with storage, luggage bay lamp, dual tone fabric seat and door trim, silver interior accents, glovebox illumination, all power windows with driver side illumination, front and rear bottle door holders, parcel shelf, front and rear adjustable headrests.

Convenience: Push button start/stop, electric power steering, tilt and telescopic steering wheels, climate control, co-driver sunvisor with vanity mirror, 60:40 rear seat split, remote keyless entry.

Instrument cluster: Battery information, idle start/stop, brake energy regeneration only in the Smart Hybrid MT version.

Audio: 7-inch infotainment touchscreen with USB, AUX, Bluetooth, four speakers with two tweeters and steering-mounted audio and telephony controls.

Verdict: In terms of must-have features, there is not a lot that this variant misses out on. However, you do miss out on a rear parking camera. But that’s not something to be worried about as you can get it fixed from your dealership after you’ve bought the car. The Glanza with the 90PS mild-hybrid engine and manual transmission is the one that should offer better fuel efficiency (23.87kmpl) than the 83PS engine with CVT (19.56kmpl). The mild-hybrid engine has a slight power advantage as well as it produces 7PS more.

Given that this Dual Jet engine with the manual transmission costs around a lakh rupees less than the 83PS engine with the CVT option, it makes the most sense for buyers looking for a more fuel efficient Glanza. In the same breath, we won’t hesitate to state that the Rs 1 lakh-odd premium asked for the CVT is also justified for those who want the convenience of an automatic transmission. So, whether it’s the manual transmission or automatic, this is the variant that you can pick without any hesitation.

Toyota Glanza V: Doesn’t justify the premium over G variant

Variant

Price

V MT (83PS engine)

Rs 7.58 lakh

V CVT (83PS engine)

Rs 8.9 lakh

Additional amount over the G

Rs 36,000 (MT) and Rs 60,000 (CVT)

Exteriors: Daytime running LEDs, UV protect glass, auto headlamps with follow-me-home function, LED tail lamps with light guide.

Interiors: Leather wrapped steering wheel, driver sunvisor with vanity mirror and lamp

Safety: Reverse parking camera with display. Verdict: The premium you pay for the Glanza V variant over the previous one is on the higher side, even for the manual transmission option. Apart from the rear parking camera, this variant doesn’t get any features that we’d call must-have.
