Toyota could bring the Fortuner facelift to India in early-2021

Update (06/01/2021): Toyota has launched the facelifted Fortuner with prices beginning from Rs 29.98 lakh (ex-showroom). Read more about it here.

  • Toyota Fortuner facelift awarded five star safety score on basis of the Hilux’s performance as both have identical mechanicals and platforms.

  • Fortuner facelift received 34.03 out of 36 for adult safety and 43.38 out of 49 for child safety.

  • The updated Fortuner will feature the same powertrain options but will get tweaked styling and new features.

The upcoming Toyota Fortuner facelift has passed its safety test with flying colours. The SUV received a perfect five star rating in the ASEAN (Association of South-East Asian Nations) NCAP crash tests.

The results of the Fortuner’s tests were derived by crashing Toyota’s Hilux pickup truck. Confused? Well, Toyota provided technical evidence to the assessment authorities stating that the two cars feature identical platforms and mechanicals. In fact, the Hilux is actually a pickup truck version of the Fortuner. Perhaps, that could explain why this story has a crash test image of the Hilux and not the Fortuner.

The results reveal that the Fortuner will provide good protection to the front occupants in case of a frontal offset collision. However, the driver’s legs showed a risk of injury in that case. It scored a total of 34.03 out of 36 for adult safety and 43.38 out of 49 for child safety.

In terms of active safety features, the Fortuner scored 13 out of 18. It can be had with ABS, ESC (electronic stability control), front passenger seatbelt reminder, autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist and departure warning, along with a forward-collision warning system. These features aren’t available with the existing Fortuner but debuted with the MG Gloster, which became the first offering in the segment to offer them. Its overall score added up to 87.46, making it eligible for a five-star rating.

The Thai-spec Fortuner has been spied testing in India and is expected to reach a Toyota showroom near you by early-2021. You can read more about its features and looks here. It’s expected to be slightly more expensive than the current model which retails between Rs 28.66 lakh and Rs 34.43 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
