Quick Comparison: i20 Active vs. Avventura vs. Etios Cross vs. Cross Polo

Modified On Dec 10, 2015 12:12 PM By Akshit for Hyundai i20 Active

Another crossover, Hyundai i20 Active ,made its way to the Indian market two days back. The crossover segment, which was a stagnant one in the recent times, has got a lot exciting now.

Volkswagen Cross Polo was the first ever such vehicle to hit the Indian roads, but the cold response left the space still for quite a while. Then last year witnessed the arrival of two crossovers, namely the Toyota Etios Cross and Fiat Avventura, which gave the segment a much-needed push. Also, the upcoming Tata Zica will make the work of these cars difficult if price id kept competitive.

Now, the latest entrant- i20 Active is all armed to go up against it rivals, Avventura, Etios Cross and the pioneer of the segment- Cross Polo. Let’s find out how it stacks up in a specifications comparison.

Exteriors:

This being a very subjective topic, the looks of the i20 Active along with the Cross Polo are the most subtle designed options. Carrying the Italian DNA, the Avventura is the most eye-catchy offering amongst the lot. While the Etios Cross has a very understated looks and stands last in these terms when compared to the three.

Dimensions:

When considering size, all of these vehicles are slightly longer, wider and taller externally than their respective hatchback counterparts, thanks to the new sporty bumpers with skid guards, side body cladding and roof rails. With identical wheelbase, the i20 Active stands out as the longest with maximum 2,570 mm.

The i20 Active is also the widest and the tallest amongst the lot, followed closely by the Cross Polo and the Avventura, which are stretched to the limit and falls just millimeters short of the four metre mark. But the Etios Cross is smaller by a good 100mm.

Ground Clarence:

Ground clearance is another crucial factor that sets the crossover apart from the hatches, and in this department Avventura emerges as clear leader with 205 mm ride height. The i20 Active also boasts a good ride height of 190 mm, while the Etios Cross and Cross Polo sit lower with 174 mm and 168 mm respectively.

Engine and Transmission:

All these cars are available with petrol and diesel engine options.

When compared in terms of the more selling diesel options, the i20 Active has the 1.4-litre 90ps/220Nm diesel unit, which is already being offered with its hatch counterpart and Verna sedan. The Cross Polo has a 1.5-litre 90ps/230 Nm, which is my pick amongst any of these engines. Again the weakest on the paper at least is the Etios Cross with a fairly underpowered engine pumping out 68ps/170Nm from a 1.4-litre unit. While the Fiat Avventura with 93ps/209Nm from its 1.3 litre Multijet sits in the middle of this power game.

Amongst petrol options, the Hyundai has a 1.2-litre engine rated at 83ps of power and 115Nm of peak torque. The Etios Cross offers a choice of two petrol mills, a 1.2-litre 80ps/104Nm engine and a more potent 1.5-litre 90ps/132Nm unit. Fiat on the other side offers only the 1.4-litre 90PS/115Nm petrol mill. While the last in list is Cross Polo with a 1.2-litre engine, good for least 75ps and 110 Nm of peak torque. All the above mentioned offerings, comes mated to a five speed manual transmission.

Only the Active gets a six-speed gearbox, whereas all others boast a five-speed transmission.

Prices and verdict:

PRICE (in lakhs, ex-showroom, Delhi) Hyundai i20 Active Toyota Etios Cross Fiat Avventura Volkswagen Cross Polo
Petrol Rs. 6.38-7.09 Rs. 6.23-7.63 Rs. 6.44-7.31 Rs. 6.9
Diesel Rs. 7.63-8.89 Rs. 7.42-7.72 Rs. 7.18-8.49 Rs. 8.4

Like any other Hyundai, the i20 Active also comes with plethora of features, which stands unbeatable in comparison to any of its competitor. Parking cameras, cornering lamps, LED headlamps with DRLs, 2-din music system with 8-speakers & 1GB memory for storage and a lot more, is being offered by the South Korean car manufacturer. So, it can be concluded that i20 Active is a great all-round package and is worth every extra penny you’ll spend on it.
