January 15, 2014: Volkswagen India has launched a new variant, the beefed up version of hatchback, the Cross Polo . Powering this latest trim is the same 1.2-litre petrol mill that pumps out 74bhp and 110Nm. This company has priced the crossover at INR 6.94 lacs (ex-showroom Mumbai) and its bookings are open from today. This model series competes against the likes of Toyota Etios Cross, Fiat Avventura and soon-to-be launched Hyundai Elite i20 Cross.

Volkswagen Cross Polo is a compact crossover which was initially sold with diesel engine only but the company has later rolled out a petrol variant. It has a spacious internal cabin owing to its large wheelbase of 2469mm and can accommodate five passengers. The internal cabin is done up with utmost care and fitted it with a driver oriented cockpit featuring an intuitive instrument and switch layout. It is incorporated with well cushioned seats and integrated with adjustable head restraints, while driver and front co-passenger seat are electrically adjustable. It has dual tone dashboard completes the overall look and is equipped with AC vents, glove box and a three spoke steering wheel with multifunctional switches. It has an advanced supervision cluster, which helps in accessing the a range of user settings. Its external look is very captivating and a lot of stylish elements like a slanting bonnet with a few visible character lines and is also embossed with a prominent company logo, frontage designed with a bold radiator grille with chrome accents, exclusive bumpers with silver accents, silver roof rails and new 'Cross' decals on rear doors. As far as its safety features are concerned, it is equipped with SRS airbags, advanced engine immobilizer, seat belt pre-tensioner, central locking system and so on. This vehicle has a rigid body structure with crumple zones that reduces the impact of collision. Both versions are mated with a five speed manual transmission gear box and Its braking mechanism is further enhanced by ABS along with EBD, which prevents the vehicle from wheel locking in case of sudden braking. A standard warranty of two years or unlimited Kilometres and can also avail an extended warranty of one year or 80000 Kilometres at a nominal cost paid to authorized dealer.
The pronounced wheel arches are fitted with a modish set of-15 inch light alloy wheels, which have a classy five spoke design. These stylish alloy rims are covered with superior quality tubeless radial tyres. Starting with the front fascia, it has bold radiator grille, which has a couple of horizontal positioned chrome plated slats. It is embossed with a prominent company logo in the center. This grille is surrounded by a trendy headlight cluster, which is powered by halogen lamps and side turn indicator. Just below this, it has a dual tone bumper that has been trimly designed and has a wide perforated black matte colored air dam for cooling the engine faster. This air dam is flanked by a pair of bright round shaped fog lamps, which further enhances the visibility of the driver. The front wind screen is made up of a toughened laminated glass and has been equipped with a pair of efficient intermittent wiper that has a wash function as well. Its door handles are in body color, while outside rear view mirrors are in silver finish. These external wing mirrors are electrically adjustable and integrated with side turn indicator. The roof of this of this crossover also gets an antenna for better reception of the FM Radio. The rear end is neatly designed with a curvy boot lid, which is embossed with variant badging and VW logo. Its windscreen is quite large and has a defogger along with wash and wipe function. It also has a sporty roof spoiler, which is integrated with a high mounted stop lamp. The tail lamp cluster is brilliantly designed and it is equipped with halogen based reverse light and turn indicators. The rear bumper is in dual tone finish and houses a pair of bright reflectors.
It has pretty good dimensions for a cross over. Its overall length is 3987mm and a total width of around 1698mm. It stands at a good height of 1483mm. A large wheelbase of 2469 will allow it to have a spacious cabin inside. About 165mm of ground clearance is not enough on Indian bumpy roads, while the minimum turning radius being 5.4 meters is convenient in manoeuvring on narrow roads.
Ed's Take : The interiors of the Cross Polo are the same like the Polo. The rear seat has less space especially the knee room if you are a tall person.
The manufacturer has blessed this crossover with a lot of utility based aspects like bottle holder in door panels, a glove box with illumination, cup holders in center console, front seat back pockets, rear center arm rest with cup holders and many other such aspects. Its dashboard is made up of high quality scratch resistant plastic, which enhances the look of the cabin. It is equipped with a few features like a large glove box with cooling effect, an illuminated instrument panel, which has a lot of functions for keeping the driver updated, a three spoke steering wheel and chrome accentuated AC vents. The internal cabin of this compact crossover is incorporated with a number of features, which gives it a plush feel. It is equipped with well cushioned seats, which are covered with premium upholstery. The seats are integrated with adjustable head restraints, which adds to the convenience. It also has a 12V power socket in center console for charging mobiles and other electronic devices. Apart from these, it also has sun visors with passenger side vanity mirror, boot mat, rear parcel shelf, steering wheel with silver accents, floor carpet, central interior light, grab rail and so on.
There are a lot of features equipped in this series which make this cross over deliver a comfortable drive. There are headrests that can be adjusted as per preference. The driver's seat can be adjusted as per height. There is an air conditioner with climatronic which has a heater function, dust and pollen filter too along with it. For entertainment sake, there is a music system that has a CD, MP3 player, a radio tuner with AM/FM. There is also a USB and an Aux-in port. Along with this, there is Bluetooth connectivity as an added advantage. Apart from a massive boot space, there are a lot of utility spaces offered byu the company inside the cabin too. These comprise of map pockets in all doors, cup and bottle holders, a glove box with pen and card holder integrated in the dashboard and many others. There is an instrument panel that is embedded with multiple notifications such as a low fuel warning light, a digital tachometer, electronic trip meter, a door ajar warning, a driver's seat belt reminder and others. This panel also has illumination effect to it. The steering wheel looks sportive and has tilt adjustment to it. An electronic power steering will help reduce the driver's effort to a great extent. All the four doors are integrated with power windows and the driver's side has a one touch up/down switch. There are parking sensors that are integrated at the rear end to make the parking job easier. The outside rear view mirrors can be adjusted electronically. The trunk room has a lamp for additional assistance.
Owing to a massive wheelbase of 2469mm, its cabin is very large and roomy and five occupants can be accommodated effortlessly. Its legroom in the front is 1042mm and in the rear is 824mm. Its front headroom is 970mm and rear headroom is 943mm. An impressive boot compartment capacity of 560 litres is advantageous in undertaking long journeys. This can be further increased to 820 litres when the rear seat is folded. Its fuel tank has a capacity to withhold 45 litres.
Ed's Take : The acceleration of the Cross Polo is decent, and it doesn’t do justice in city driving.
Both the engines are integrated with a five speed manual transmission gear box. The diesel motor can reach a maximum speed of 160 to 165 Kmph and also is capable in breaching 100 Kmph mark in about 14.4 seconds. On the other hand, the petrol engine can gear up to 170 Kmph and can also accelerate from 0 to 100 Kmph within 12 seconds.
Ed's Take : The performance of the Cross Polo could have been better. The engine has a good amount of turbo lag and this can be felt.
There are diesel and petrol versions available to pick from. Its 1.5-litre TDI diesel mill has a displacement capacity of 1498cc. There are four cylinders and sixteen valves which are arranged based on a dual overhead camshaft based valve configuration. It can generate a maximum power of 88.7bhp at 4200rpm and a peak torque of 230Nm at 1500 to 2500rpm. It runs on a common rail direct injection based fuel supply system which has a fuel efficiency of 20.14 Kmpl on highways. And when driven in the cities, this figure is minimized to 16 Kmpl. On the other hand, the petrol version is incorporated with 1.2-litre in-line engine which can displace 1198cc. This has four cylinders and can produce a maximum power of 73.9bhp at 5400rpm and a peak torque output of 110Nm at 3750rpm. It runs on a multi point fuel injection based fuel supply system and has a fuel efficiency of around 12 Kmpl in the cities and about 16.47 Kmpl on bigger roads.
Ed's Take : The mileage of the Cross Polo is similar to the 1.2-litre diesel engine on the Polo, highly-efficient.
Its diesel engine is based on a common rail direct injection fuel supply system. This is capable in delivering a mileage of 16 Kmpl when driven under standard city driving conditions and this figure can go up to 20.14 Kmpl on runways. On the other hand, the petrol engine runs on a multi point fuel injection based fuel supply system. This allows for a 12 Kmpl mileage in the cities and can stretch up to 16.47 Kmpl when driven on highways. These figures are approved by Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI).
Ed's Take : The power produced by this oil burner is good on paper as producing 75bhp from a 1.2-litre diesel is good.
Its 1.2-litre petrol mill has the capacity to generate a maximum power of 73.9bhp at 5400rpm and also can churn a peak torque output of about 110Nm at 3750rpm. Whereas, the diesel mill is capable in producing 88.7bhp of maximum power at 4200rpm and 230Nm of peak torque within 1500 to 2500rpm range.
Ed's Take : The Cross Polo gets steering mounted audio controls with Bluetooth connectivity on the integrated music system.
There is an advanced music system integrated which has ports to support CD/MP3, USB and an Aux-in. This unit is complimented by four speakers for surround sound distribution across the cabin. This also has a Bluetooth connectivity, which is of a great advantage. The user can further customize their vehicle with various accessories from an authorized dealer at an additional cost. The list of features can be external body decals, navigation system, rear view camera, a touch screen and many others.
Ed's Take : The handling characteristics of the Cross Polo are brilliant as it based on the Polo platform that is also used in the Polo Cup Racing.
Its braking and suspension system is well endowed with efficient mechanism. Its front axle is fitted with a McPherson strut along with a stabilizer bar. While the rear axle has a semi independent trailing arm based suspension system. Coming to the braking section, a set of ventilated discs are integrated to the front wheels and the rear wheels are fixed with a standard pair of drum brakes. An anti lock braking system is integrated, which will allow to gain extra control over the vehicle over all kinds of roads by preventing locking of the wheels and skidding. The steering wheel is speed sensitive and also has a 5.4 meters of minimum turning radius. This steering wheel also has a tilt adjustment function to it.
Ed's Take : The safety features on the Cross Polo are airbags and ABS.
Plenty of features are incorporated in this cross over which will make the drive safe. There is an engine immobilizer along with a floating code which will avoid thefts related worries. An anti lock braking system will not allow skidding on slippery roads, which is of a great safety feature existing in this series. Furthermore, there is an electronic brake force distribution mated to it which offers stronger grip. A front under-body guard will safeguard the engine from external impact. Airbags are offered for the driver as well as for the co-driver. There are head rests integrated to all the seats which can be height adjusted. For better vision, there are fog lamps fitted in the front and rear end too. There is a high mounted stop lamp fixed to the rear end of the roof. All the windows have pinch guard safety function.
As a standard feature, it is bestowed with a set of stylish looking alloy wheels of 15 inches. These are covered up by 185/60 R15 sized tubeless radial tyres. A full size spare wheel is also offered by the company, which is present in the boot compartment along with a kit that has all the necessary tools to change a flat tyre.
