Its elongated rear end has been redesigned to distinguish it from the hatchback

  • New crossover based on third-gen i20 gets redesigned rear end.

  • It has the same front-end styling and interior as the hatchback.

  • The test mule was equipped with 10.25-inch screens for the instrument cluster and the infotainment system.

  • Third-gen i20 hatchback is expected to arrive in India before the end of 2020.

  • The i20 crossover is unlikely to be offered here.

The third-gen Hyundai i20 hatchback made its global debut in early-2020. While we are still waiting for it to arrive at our shores, a new crossover version of the third-gen i20 has been spied in Europe.

The spied model has a slightly higher ground clearance than the hatchback and a different design for the elongated rear end. Its front-end styling seems to be the same as the regular model. In its previous-gen avatar, the i20 crossover was simply known as the i20 Active. It was the same hatchback but with a raised suspension and body cladding. This new one seems to have been given more time and thought with the body design tweaked as well. In its camouflaged state, it looked more like a wagon.

Its cabin has also been spied with mild camouflage netting over the central console. This Hyundai crossover has the same layout as the new i20 with two 10.25-inch displays: one for the instrument cluster and a touchscreen unit for the infotainment system. It even has the same steering wheel that is offered in the India-spec Creta.

Hyundai will likely offer this i20 crossover as a touring model in the European markets. It should also share the same 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine in both 100PS and 120PS tunes. This engine also gets the option of a 48-volt mild-hybrid system in Europe. It might fill the gap between the hatchback and the Kona in those markets since they don’t get the Venue.

We’ll have to wait a while to see the details of the new rear-end design of this i20-based crossover. Hyundai will also be launching a performance-oriented hot hatch N version of its hatchback in those markets which is expected to offer around 200PS of power. The India-spec third-gen i20 is expected to arrive before the end of 2020 with the same petrol and diesel engine options as the Venue. But the i20 crossover is unlikely to be offered here.
