CNG prices have shot up by over Rs 30 per kilogram in over a year in many cities

For the past couple of years, several cars have been launched with the option of a CNG. From the time when there were a handful of CNG cars, we have close to 20 of them now. The green fuel alternative is being accepted by buyers because the running cost is considerably lower than a petrol car.

However, in over a year, the CNG filling prices have shot up by over Rs 30 per kilogram. In 2021, the prices were around Rs 40 to 50 per kilogram, which are now in the range of Rs 80 to 90. Now, CNG prices are inching closer to diesel prices in several cities.

As per our tested fuel efficiency figures, the difference between diesel and CNG is very less. In Mumbai, it will cost you around Rs 3,500 to fill up a Grand i10 Nios diesel. With this, you will get a driving range of around 700 kilometres. Now if we have to match the same on the CNG, the total filling cost will be around Rs 3,200.

If we compare other aspects of the Nios CNG versus the diesel as a reference of other cars, for a difference of around Rs 300, you are basically giving up on boot space and the extra torque that a diesel carries. Not to forget the endless lines at CNG pumps currently.

However, due to the stricter emission norms kicking in from April 2023, several small diesel cars will be phased out with the accompanying sharp increase in prices. But at the same time, manufacturers like Maruti and Tata are planning to expand their CNG portfolio, which could include their subcompact SUVs as well.
