Toyota has opted to not copy all of Maruti’s homework when it comes to the Urban Cruiser

Update (23/09/2020): Toyota has launched the Urban Cruiser with prices beginning from Rs 8.40 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Read more about it here.

  • Urban Cruiser gets a redesigned front end compared to the Vitara Brezza.

  • Looks similar to Fortuner in design.

  • The rear is also expected to get slight modifications.

  • It will get a 1.5-litre petrol engine with mild-hybrid like the Vitara Brezza.

  • You will be able to choose between a manual and an automatic.

  • It will be priced between Rs 8.5 lakh and Rs 11.5 lakh.

Toyota previously shared a teaser of the upcoming Urban Cruiser SUV, and at the time, we could only catch a glimpse of its logo on the grille and a bit of the alloy wheels. Now the Japanese carmaker has shared a second teaser which shows a lot more of the two and a few new elements as well.

If you are new to the whole Urban Cruiser saga, you should know that it is Toyota’s second attempt at rebadging Maruti cars, after the Baleno spawned the Glanza. Both carmakers have a partnership that allows them to cross-badge one another’s products.

The new teaser of the Urban Cruiser shows a bit more of the alloy wheels, which apart from the Toyota logo in the middle are identical to the ones offered on the Vitara Brezza. At the front though, it looks like Toyota has made a few changes. The bumper has been sculpted again and now features a more aggressive look. The two chrome appliques that make up the front grille of the Vitara Brezza have been replaced by two black horizontal inserts, flanked by two silver garnishing elements. The fog lamp housing has also been redesigned. Look at it for a little while and you’ll notice a resemblance to Toyota’s bigger SUVs such as the Fortuner.

Does that appeal hold once you get to see the front fascia in all its entirety? Only time will tell. And that time will come soon as Toyota has revealed that the Urban Cruiser will be launched in the upcoming festive season. If you’d like to put money down on one before that happens, the word from Toyota is that they will start accepting bookings from August-end.

The Urban Cruiser will share all of its internals with the Vitara Brezza, which means the only engine on offer will be a 1.5-litre petrol motor that can be had with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. You’ll also get a mild-hybrid system, same as the Brezza. The feature list will be the same as the Vitara Brezza as well, although we expect Toyota to offer the Urban Cruiser in select ‘well-loaded’ variants only. And just like the Glanza offers a better warranty package than the Baleno, the Urban Cruiser is also expected to come with a better warranty package than the Vitara Brezza. For reference, the Vitara Brezza is offered with a 2-year/40,000km standard warranty.

We expect the price of the Brezza to start from Rs 8.5 lakh and go up to Rs 11.5 lakh. In that space, it will go up against the likes of the Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport, Mahindra XUV300, and the upcoming Kia Sonet.
