The facelifted MPV still misses out on modern safety assist systems

  • Toyota has unveiled the facelifted Innova in Indonesia.

  • It has cleared the South-East Asian NCAP crash tests and earned a 5-star safety rating.

  • It gets dual front airbags and driver-knee airbag, ABS with EBD, and stability control as standard.

  • The facelifted model gets a mild cosmetic update to its front end and a few feature updates too.

  • Toyota is expected to bring the facelifted Innova to India by early-2021.

The 2020 Toyota Innova facelift is about to be launched first in markets like Indonesia. It has just taken the ASEAN NCAP crash tests and cleared them with a high enough score for a 5-star safety rating.

The Innova comes with dual front airbags, driver-knee airbag, ABS with EBD, front seat belts with pretensioner and force limiter, and electronic stability control as standard. It gets seven airbags in the top variant. However, the Toyota MPV doesn’t come with safety assist technologies like autonomous emergency braking, lane assist, and forward collision warning. It still scored well enough across all three categories: adult safety, child occupant safety and safety assists.

As seen in its Indonesia-spec, the 2020 Innova gets a mild cosmetic update to its front fascia and minor changes elsewhere. It’s been seen with a new touchscreen infotainment display and the addition of a built-in air purifier system too. The India-spec facelift is expected to get the same updates while the powertrain options will remain unchanged. Toyota offers it with the choice of 2.7-litre petrol and 2.4-litre diesel engines, both with the option of a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic.

The facelifted Innova is expected to arrive in India by early-2021 with a small premium over its current prices ranging from Rs 15.66 lakh to Rs 23.63 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It still doesn’t have any direct rivals in India but acts as an alternative to the Mahindra Marazzo, Kia Carnival, MG Hector Plus, and the upcoming Tata Gravitas.
