Skoda Auto Volkswagen India will be taking the Maruti Suzuki route once the BS6 emission norms are implemented in India. So post-April 2020, the group will have only petrol engines in its portfolio. It recently also announced the discontinuation of the 1.5-litre that is available in various sedans and a hatchback (VW Polo). However, the brand might bring diesel engines back if there is enough demand.
The VW Tiguan and Skoda Kodiaq, which are powered by a 2.0-litre TDI engine, will get a new petrol powertrain. Globally, the Kodiaq gets 1.5-litre (150PS/250Nm) and 2.0-litre (190PS/320Nm) TSI petrol engines. Expect the bigger unit to make it to our shores and find its way under the Tiguan as well.
Other mass-oriented offerings such as the Skoda Rapid and VW Vento will get a 1.0-litre TSI turbo-petrol engine along with CNG-powered options as well. This new locally made engine will also feature in VW and Skoda's upcoming compact SUVs, the T-Cross and Kamiq, respectively.
The Skoda Octavia's segment has been witnessing a slowdown in the sales of diesel-powered offerings for a while now. Hence, it's only natural to see it take the petrol-only route like the facelifted Hyundai Elantra. More affluent offerings in the group stable like the Superb and VW Passat will also get rid of their 2.0-litre diesel engines. The upcoming facelifted Superb will have a more potent 2.0-litre petrol TSI engine as well.
