Skoda Is Evaluating A CNG Option With The 1-Litre TSI Engine For The Kylaq Sub-4m SUV

The Skoda Kylaq debuted in India as the carmaker’s most affordable SUV in India, prices of which range between Rs 8.25 lakh and Rs 13.99 lakh (ex-showroom, pan-India). It uses the 1-litre turbo-petrol engine from the Skoda Slavia and Kushaq. Currently, this is the only powertrain that is available with the subcompact SUV.

However, in a recent media interaction, Ashish Gupta, Brand Director of Skoda India was asked about the possibility of a CNG option as well, which he mentioned was “definitely on the table but not at this stage”. Clarifying, he stated “CNG is an interesting proposition. What we are evaluating right now in terms of CNG is compatibility of our turbo engines with it.”

Skoda has long been exploring the introduction of CNG in its Indian model range, prior to even the introduction of the Kylaq. Years ago, a source close to CarDekho also mentioned Skoda’s intent to make CNG more desirable from a marketing perspective in order to offer the fuel option while maintaining a premium image.

Notably, this is not the first time that a Skoda car with a turbo-charged engine is getting a CNG choice, as the internationally available Scala and Citigo hatchbacks, and the Octavia sedan get a similar setup.

Skoda Kylaq: Current Powertrain Options

Currently, the Skoda Kylaq comes with a 1-litre turbo-petrol engine with both manual and automatic options, the details of which are as follows:

If the Kylaq manages to get a CNG powertrain with the turbo-petrol engine, it will not be the first car with a turbocharged engine to get such a setup. The Tata Nexon gets it with its 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine. Typically, CNG-equipped cars are only offered with a manual transmission to keep prices in check. However, given how Skoda vocally wants more customers to opt for the Kylaq automatic, Skoda should explore this option should CNG be introduced. What also remains to be seen is if Skoda will be offering CNG as a factory-fit option (like in the Tata Nexon) or as an OEM-approved dealer-level kit (as in the new Honda Amaze).

The only issue the carmaker is currently facing is preparing its India-made 1-litre TSI compatible with CNG tech. Once that is done, Skoda can offer some new variants which get such an option. While the carmaker is yet to comment on this, the Slavia and Kushaq with the smaller engine can also get CNG variants later. Given their large boot space, accommodating a CNG tank is easier too.

Rivals

In the sub-4m SUV segment, a CNG option is offered with the Maruti Brezza and Tata Nexon, while in the Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger it is offered as a dealership-level fitment. The Maruti Fronx and Toyota Taisor, which are sub-4m crossover SUVs, also get the cleaner fuel option. So, if the Kylaq gets a CNG option, it will rival these cars.

On the other hand, variants of the current-spec Kylaq rival the Kia Sonet, Kia Syros, Hyundai Venue and Mahindra XUV 3XO.
