A 3-cylinder 1.0-litre petrol engine will be the basis of multitudes of powertrain options in Renault Kiger

  • Renault Kiger to get a 1.0-litre petrol engine in two states of tune: naturally aspirated and turbocharged.

  • A CVT will be limited to the turbo-petrol unit.

  • Renault Kiger launch expected in early-2021 with prices ranging between Rs 6 lakh and Rs 9 lakh.

  • It will rival the likes of Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue and its sibling, the Nissan Magnite.

Renault India might be a few months away from launching its new sub-4m SUV, the Kiger, but we already have its engine specifications courtesy of the upcoming Nissan Magnite

Just like the Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta, the Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger will be sharing their parts bin. That also includes the 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine that is available as a naturally aspirated and a turbocharged unit in the Magnite. Take a look at the detailed specifications of this engine’s multiple guises:

Aspect

1.0-litre naturally-aspirated

1.0-litre turbocharged

Power

72PS

100PS

Torque

96Nm

160Nm/152Nm

Transmission

5-speed MT

5-speed MT/ CVT

Claimed Fuel Efficiency

18.75kmpl

20kmpl/17.7kmpl

The naturally aspirated petrol engine is extremely underpowered on paper even when compared to Hyundai Venue or Kia Sonet’s 1.2-litre units. However, the figures become a lot more respectable when a turbocharger is added into the equation. That said, even the turbo-equipped engine cannot match the numbers of similarly equipped rivals such as the Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV300. But the Magnite’s kerb weight of 1,014 kg is much lower than the Nexon’s by nearly 200-300kg.

Renault Kiger Launch Delayed; Kia Sonet, Toyota Urban Cruiser Rival To Arrive in 2021

As for fuel efficiency, the numbers are for the Nissan Magnite but expect more or less similar numbers from the Kiger given the similar underpinnings and engine options. If you are awaiting a diesel engine, you should know the Renault Kiger will come as a petrol-only offering just like the Nissan Magnite.

Apart from the engine, the Renault Kiger is also going to share the Magnite’s platform and  features as well. So, expect respectable cabin storage space and a decently loaded cabin with features such as a touchscreen, ambient lighting and air purifier among others.

The Renault Kiger is likely to launch in early-2021, post the Magnite’s launch with prices ranging between Rs 6 lakh and Rs 9 lakh. The Nissan Magnite is expected to hit the showrooms in January 2021.
