The peppiest front-engined rear-wheel-drive sports coupe of this era has arrived with more power than ever before

2023 BMW M2

  • The new BMW M2 is priced at Rs 98 lakh (ex-showroom).

  • Exterior highlights include M-specific alloy wheels, grille and bumpers.

  • BMW has given it red accents, carbon fibre bits and M-specific details on the inside.

  • New features include the latest dashboard featuring the 14.9-inch touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital driver’s display.

  • It gets a 3-litre, inline six twin-turbo petrol engine, with 6-speed MT and 8-speed AT options.

The second-generation BMW M2 has been launched in India. It is the most powerful M2 ever produced, and is being offered as a completely built-up unit (CBU). It is a 2-door, 4-seater sports car priced at Rs 98 lakh (ex-showroom). Here’s everything you need to know about the new M2:

Looks The Part

While BMW’s latest styling language over the last few years has been somewhat polarising, the new M2 is not one that was worst affected by it. The second-gen M2 has a meaner look, which is highlighted by its aggressively styled LED headlights, sleeker grille (with horizontal black slats), and sportier bumpers with large bulges for vents. If you like a black smoked effect in the headlights, you can opt for the M Shadow Line Lights.

From the sides, you can see the low-riding stance of the sports car. BMW has also provided it with sportier-looking side skirts, M2-specific alloy wheels (19-inch at the front and 20-inch at the rear), and sharper ORVMs. While the brake callipers are finished in blue, you can have them in a red shade as well. The alloy wheels, on the other hand, are done up in black. The M2 features M-style quad exhausts, vertically placed air intakes in the chunky bumper, and a contrast black diffuser.

Being an M model, the M2 is loaded with M-specific details including carbon fibre bits, M-coloured highlights, and red accents. BMW also offers the sports car with carbon fibre bucket seats which removes 11kg from the M2’s total body weight.

The M2’s equipment list includes a 14.9-inch touchscreen system, paddle shifters, cruise control, 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, connected car tech, heated seats, and heads-up display. Its safety net comprises a plethora of driver-assist systems including reversing assist, attentiveness assist, and parking assist. Other safety features include multiple airbags, dynamic stability control (DSC), cornering brake control (CBC), and a 360-degree camera.

Twin-turbo Under The Hood

BMW has plonked a 3-litre, 6-cylinder twin-turbo petrol engine under the latest M2’s hood, which makes 460PS and 550Nm. It can be had with either a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic gearbox, driving the rear wheels. There are four drive modes on offer: Efficient, Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus.

When it comes to performance, the M2 can go from 0-100kmph in 4.1 seconds (automatic) and 4.3 seconds with the manual gearbox. If you choose the M Driver’s Package, the sports car’s top speed increases from the electronically limited 250kmph to 285kmph. As standard, it also comes with the Active M Differential at the rear axle for better handling.

Whom Does It Compete With?

BMW’s sports car doesn’t have any direct rivals in India, and its nearest competitor is the Porsche 718 Cayman GTS. The Mercedes-AMG A45 S hatchback and the Audi S5 Sportback are less powerful but similarly priced and more practical alternatives.
