Most car brands experienced decline in month-on-month (MoM) sales compared to January 2024

In February 2024, Maruti like always took the top spot for being the best selling car brand in India. Last month, Tata climbed up to the second spot beating Hyundai, the fourth time ever. Save for Mahindra, MG, and Renault, all other brands mentioned here have experienced decline in monthly sales. Let’s have a look at the sales performance of each brand for last month.

Maruti Swift

  • Maruti Suzuki continued to be the top-selling car brand in India in February 2024. The automaker retailed more than 1.60 lakh units last month, which is more than the combined sales of Tata, Hyundai, and Mahindra. Though the brand saw a decline of nearly 4 percent in month-on-month (MoM) sales, its year-on-year (YoY) growth was approximately 9 percent.

  • Tata overtook Hyundai in February 2024 sales by selling more than 50,000 cars in February 2024. The brand also registered a YoY growth of nearly 20 percent.

  • Hyundai’s MoM sales declined by over 12 percent in February 2024, though it still crossed the 50,000-unit mark.

Mahindra Thar

  • Even though Mahindra’s MoM sales dipped by 1.5 percent last month, the automaker sold more than 42,000 SUVs in February. The Indian automaker also registered significant growth of over 40 percent in YoY sales.

  • Toyota also climbed up to the fifth spot in the sales table overtaking Kia, by selling 23,000-odd units last month. Its MoM demand grew by a small margin, while it also witnessed the highest YoY growth of nearly 53 percent.

  • Kia’s monthly sales declined by 15 percent in February 2024. The automaker retailed over 20,000 cars last month, but saw a downfall of nearly 18 percent in yearly sales.

Honda Elevate

  • Though Honda registered a YoY growth of nearly 17.5 percent last month, its February sales still fell short by over 1,500 units compared to January 2024.

  • MG is the only automaker here to witness a positive growth in both MoM and YoY sales of 18.5 percent and over 8 percent, respectively. The carmaker retailed more than 4,500 in February 2024.

  • Though Renault witnessed the biggest decline of more than 38 percent in yearly sales, it managed to sell more than 4,000 cars last month. The brand registered a MoM growth of close to 7 percent.

  • With a little over 3,000 units dispatched, Volkswagen took the last spot on the sales chart. The German automake’s MoM and YoY figures dipped by over 7.5 percent and nearly 9 percent, respectively.
