Could be introduced with a sportier ‘N-Line’ variant

  • With the third-gen nameplate, i10 will get a go-fast version globally, including India.

  • Recently launched Grand i10 Nios and the upcoming third-gen Euro-spec i10 are essentially the same.

  • Upcoming Euro-spec third-gen Hyundai i10 spied testing in sportier avatar.

  •  The i10 will get Hyundai’s N Performance or N-Line variant in Europe.

  • New i10 N expected to be powered by 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, same as the Venue sub-compact SUV in India.

  • India-spec Nios expected to be powered by the same engine.

The third-gen Hyundai i10, which has been launched in India as the Grand i10 Nios, is yet to make its European debut. While it has been teased in official sketches, a sportier looking version of it was spied testing too. It could be an N Performance variant of the new i10.

The i10 spied was equipped with a sporty dual-exhaust and wider tyres with different alloys. These two elements alone suggest that an i10 N might be more than a cosmetic N-Line variant. The larger wheels also have red centre caps.

While covered entirely in camouflage, one can almost make out the sportier looking front grille and bigger air intakes as compared to the regular Euro-spec model teased in sketches as well as the Grand i10 Nios.

Hyundai India officials had disclosed to us that there is a high probability of introducing its 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine to the Nios’ lineup which is globally available in two states of tune - 100PS and 120PS.

This engine made its India debut in the Venue sub-4m SUV where it is tuned to an output of 120PS and 172Nm while mated to a 6-speed manual, with the choice of a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic as well. Hyundai is likely to offer it in the 100PS tune with both transmission options in the hatchback.

Usually, there is a price jump of approximately Rs 1 lakh for the turbo-petrol engine over the regular, naturally aspirated unit. That means a Hyundai Grand i10 Nios N-Line, in the top-spec, would likely be priced around Rs 8.9 lakh -- and would be closer to Rs 10 lakh if offered with the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, which is unlikely.

Hyundai Likely To Introduce N Performance Models In India By 2022

The i30N is Hyundai’s only N Performance model yet, with sportier cosmetics on offer for N-Line variants, such as with the new Tucson. However, none of those cars are currently offered in India.

The Korean carmaker had hinted at plans to introduce the N brand in India as well but did not confirm if it would include N Performance models or be limited to sportier cosmetics via N-Line variants. Whichever it is, it could be introduced here by 2022 and the Venue could get an N-Line variant too.

There could be a possibilty that the hardcore N Performance range would come later, while sportier N-Line variants of their cars would make it here relatively sooner like in the Nios. Even the next-gen i20, expected in 2020, is likely to get the 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine in India.

The hot hatch market in India is currently populated by the Volkswagen Polo GT and Tata Tiago JTP. Maybe Hyundai joining the fray with its feature-rich offerings would be a welcome addition for the driving enthusiasts.
