The Force Motors plant that makes engines for BMW has a new line in place to build the more powerful petrol motor.

In May this year, BMW India launched the 3 Series petrol, followed by the petrol-powered 5 Series in June. Both cars get the same 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine that makes 184PS of power and 270Nm of torque, with 0-100kmph times of 7.3 seconds (320i) and 7.9 seconds (520i).

We’ve driven both cars and, while neither one is a slouch, we did find ourselves wishing for a little more excitement. Well, enthusiasts now have something to look forward to as both cars will be offered with a more powerful petrol motor.

For reference, this new engine has already debuted with the newly-launched 3GT. It too is a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol motor, but produces 252PS of power and a juicy 350Nm of torque, enabling a 0-100kmph time of just 6.1 seconds with the 3 Series Gran Turismo!

The Force Motors plant, which builds engines for BMW, has a new assembly line in place to make the more powerful engine. The motor will make its way into the 3 Series sedan and 5 Series, giving us the ‘330i’ and ‘530i’. Both versions will come with eight-speed automatic transmissions that drive the rear wheels.

The new variants could be introduced in January-March 2017, if not earlier. They are expected to complement the existing 320i/520i and not replace them, at least initially. Currently, the 320i is priced at Rs 36.90-42.70 lakh, while the 520i is available for Rs 54 lakh (both prices ex-showroom, Delhi). The more powerful ‘30i’ avatars are likely to command a premium of Rs 4-5 lakh.
