Datsun Redi-Go World Premiere Tomorrow
More than two years after showcasing the concept, Datsun will unveil its second hatchback, Redi-Go on Thursday. It will compete against the Renault Kwid, the Alto 800 and the Nano GenX.
Datsun planted its roots in India with the launch of its hatchback the Redi-Go. Now, more than two years after showcasing the concept, Datsun will unveil its second hatchback on Thursday. It will compete against the Renault Kwid, the Alto 800 and the Nano GenX. This week saw many teasers of the car and finally a sketch of the baby Datsun being revealed.
The DatsunRedi GO images resemble its concept which was showcased at the 2014 Auto Expo. It sticks to the floaty lines of a hatchback, unlike the Kwid which, despite sharing the CMF-A platform with the Redi-Go (thanks to the Renault–Nissan alliance), has an SUV stance. The Redi-Go might borrow the Kwid’s engine, but with a slightly different tune.
Datsun will want to undercut the price of the Kwid (INR 2.56 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi), which could mean that the car might miss out on the digital instrument cluster and the touchscreen infotainment system with navigation which made the Kwid a hit in the Indian market.
In terms of features, it might bear resemblance with the Alto 800. The Kwid is lighter compared to its competitor, courtesy its platform. It overpowers the Alto by 6bhp, and is the best performer in its segment. The same equation should apply to the Redi-Go too, as it is similar to the Kwid.
But the engine refinement level of the Alto 800 is more than the Renault’s, which gives it a better drivability. If Datsun is able to tune the engine better, the Redi-Go will be a good option in the entry level car segment. In order to increase cabin safety, Datsun should equip the car with airbags and other safety features. This will help customers overcome the unpleasantness of the incident of when, following the crash test, the Global NCAP chairman Max Mosley requested Nissan’s Chairman and CEO Carlos Ghosn to withdraw the Datsun Go from the Indian and other markets on an urgent basis.
It is to be noted that this test was conducted in a car without airbags. Since then, Datsun has started offering driver-side airbags for its Go hatchback and MPV sibling Go+.
