Update (23/09/2020): Toyota has launched the Urban Cruiser with prices beginning from Rs 8.40 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Read more about it here.

  • Urban Cruiser bookings to open on August 22 for a token amount of Rs 11,000.

  • The Vitara Brezza-based SUV is likely to launch in the next few weeks.

  • It gets a Toyota Fortuner-like front grille for an imposing look.

  • Will feature all-LED lighting as well as daytime running lamps that double up as indicators.

  • Will get features like keyless entry, push-button start/stop and automatic climate control as standard.

  • There will be a couple of new colour options as well.

  • It will be offered with a 1.5-litre petrol engine with manual and automatic transmission options.

  • Urban Cruiser prices likely to range between Rs 8.5 lakh and Rs 11.5 lakh.

Toyota India is set to open official bookings of its first-ever sub-4m SUV, theUrban Cruiser, on August 22. Prospective customers will be able to book one for a token amount of Rs 11,000 through Toyota’s dealerships or its website. The Urban Cruiser will go on sale in the next few weeks.

The leaked brochure gives us our clearest view of the front end that confirms a Fortuner-esque design philosophy. It features a twin slat grille flanked by thick vertical chrome strips that abuts with the headlamps on each side. The fog lamps get chrome surrounds and the bumper’s angular shape clearly mimics the eldest SUV in Toyota’s Indian lineup, the Fortuner. All the other bits shown in the brochure seem identical to the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza.

The Urban Cruiser will feature the set of equipment as its Maruti Suzuki counterpart. That means it features LED elements for the headlamps, fog lamps and tail lights. That said, the LED daytime running lamps on the Urban Cruiser also double up as turn indicators. The 16-inch machine-finished alloy wheels are also identical to the ones offered on the Vitara Brezza.

Colour options include the same monotone paint that Maruti offers with its SUV, save for Sizzling Red which has been replaced by Rustic Brown here. The remaining options include Suave Silver, Groovy Orange, Iconic Grey, Spunky Blue and Sunny White. There will be three dual tone options as well. The brown and blue shades get the option of a black roof while the orange paint can be had with a white roof.

The interiors get a dual-tone dark brown upholstery instead of the Vitara Brezza’s all-black theme. The layout of the cabin, however, is the same. Creature comforts include rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming inside rearview mirror, and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Features like keyless entry, push-button start/stop and automatic climate control will be offered as standard.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser derives power from Maruti Suzuki’s 1.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine (105PS/138Nm) that can be had with a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. Like the Vitara Brezza, the automatic gets mild-hybrid tech offering torque assist, idle auto start/stop and regenerative braking. But while Maruti offers a 2 year/40,000km warranty, the Toyota gets a 3-year/1 lakh km warranty.

The Toyota Urban Cruiser will go on sale in the coming weeks with prices expected to range from Rs 8.5 lakh to Rs 11.5 lakh (ex-showroom). It will not only compete with its Maruti counterpart, the Vitara Brezza, but also take on other sub-4 metre SUVs like the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, and the Ford EcoSport. The upcoming Kia Sonet will also be in the crosshairs of the Toyota SUV.
