Toyota Innova Crysta vs Tata Hexa: The Apt Rivalry

The Tata Hexa will have almost everything the new Innova has to offer, but at a relatively lower price point!

Toyota was not content with just bringing in the second generation of over a decade old Innova, but the Japanese automaker had to totally re-imagine it. There is no comparison between the two, as the 2016 Innova is in a league of its own.

The Innova has always been on the costlier side relatively to others in its segment. Breaching the INR 20 lakhs barrier, the Crysta has clearly left behind its segment, that comprises of vehicles such as the Lodgy, the Mobilio, the Ertiga and others. But, this second-gen model has the goodies and powertrains to justify its price tag. As of now, it has no direct competitor, but the upcoming Tata Hexa appears to be its most appropriate rival. Let us check out what both the vehicles have to offer in this Tata Hexa vs Innova Crysta comparison, but do remember the Hexa is yet to be launched.

Innova Crysta

• The Innova Crysta comes with a total of seven airbags (dual front, front side, curtain and driver knee). It features three airbags (dual front and driver knee) as standard along with ABS with EBD and BA (brake assist)
• It also offers VSC (vehicle stability control) and Hill Start Assist

Tata Hexa

• Compared to the Crysta, the Tata Hexa will come with six-airbags (dual front, front side and curtain) along with ABS with EBD and Corner Stability Control
• Tata has not revealed what all will be offered as standard, however, we believe that dual-front airbags and rest of the brake assistance systems will come as standard
• Remaining safety features include — Vehicle Dynamic Control (electronic stability control), Traction Control System and Engine Drag Control System
• The Hexa will come with four-driving modes - Auto, Comfort, Dynamic and Rough Road. The modes can be selected from a rotary knob (similar to the new Endeavour)
• The drive modes combine the benefits of electronic stability programme and engine calibration, enabling the vehicle to tackle different terrains

Toyota Innova

• It features automatic LED projector headlamps with daytime running LEDs
• The higher trims ride on 215/55 cross-section R17 alloys, while the lower ones come with 205/65 cross-section 16-inch-ers

• Innova Crysta comes with a seven-inch capacitive touchscreen infotainment system featuring navigation and a host of playback options. It will also support Toyota’s T-Connect services which were launched during the 2016 Auto Expo. It comes with a six-speaker system along with an amplifier. It also doubles up as a rear-view camera screen
• The top-end versions come with leather upholstery (black or brown) and the driver’s seat is eight-way power adjustable

Tata Hexa

• Like the Crysta, the Hexa also come with projector headlamps and LED daytime running lamps. However, unlike the Innova, it comes with wrap-around LED taillamps
• The Hexa rides on massive 235/55 cross-section nineteen-inch tyres featuring machined alloys (diamond-cut)
• The Hexa will come with the next iteration of Tata’s five-inch ConnectNext infotainment system which is found in the Zest siblings. Like always, the system has been designed by Harman and the decibels are pumped by its sister company - JBL. The Hexa comes with ten-speaker JBL system with a subwoofer and an amplifier

• The infotainment system comes with features such as playback via USB, iPod, SD Card, Aux and Bluetooth audio. The unit will also display SMS (readout too) along with rear view camera support and navigation. Moreover, the Hexa will offer smart USB charging ports which modulates charging as per the connected device
• Unlike the Innova Crysta’s single blue colour ambient lighting, the Hexa comes with four-different colours. Tata calls it ‘Mood lighting’. Moreover, the Hexa also comes with adjustable multicoloured car illumination with eight different colours (white, orange, red, purple, blue, cyan, bluish green, and fluorescent green) that can change based on the selected drive modes

The new Innova’s 2.4-litre variant starts at INR 13.8 lakhs (ex-showroom, Mumbai) since Toyota cannot retail the car in the NCR region (diesel’s displacement > 2.0-litre). The new Innova with its 2.4-litre unit lies in the bracket of INR 13.8 - 19.4 lakhs. And this is the motor that will go head-to -head with the Hexa, even though the Tata is torquiest compared to both the motors the Innova Crysta has to offer. It is highly likely that the new Hexa will undercut Innova’s price bracket by a sizeable amount. Also, the top-end variant is expected do the same! However, we have to wait until the end of this year to find out how this rivalry will fair.
