Toyota’s claimed fuel efficiency figure for the diesel Fortuner 4x4 AT is 12.9kmpl. How much does it deliver in the real world?

The Toyota Fortuner has been the best-selling large ladder-frame SUV in the country with average monthly sales of around 1700 units from quite some time now. It is available with both petrol and diesel engine options and can be had with a 6-speed MT as well as a 6-speed automatic transmission.

We recently tested the Fortuner in its 4X4 diesel AT avatar and noted the mileage it delivered per litre of fuel. Here are the numbers:

Displacement

2.8-litre

Max power

177PS

Peak torque

450Nm

Transmission

6-speed AT with paddle shifters

Claimed fuel efficiency

12.9kmpl

Tested fuel efficiency (city)

9.39kmpl

Tested fuel efficiency (highway)

13.19kmpl

Mileage

50% in city and 50% on highway

25% in city and 75% on highway

75% in city and 25% on highway

10.97kmpl

11.97kmpl

10.11kmpl

You can read our Toyota Fortuner review here before you plan to buy one. The real-world fuel efficiency results reveal that the Fortuner is not as fuel efficient as the manufacturer’s claim, which is expected too, since claimed figures are recorded under controlled conditions.

If you drive predominantly in city, then expect the Toyota to return somewhere around 10 kmpl over a longer duration. The figure can drop even lower if you negotiate dense traffic most of the times. On the other hand, if your daily routine involves a route that is relatively empty and where you can cruise, expect the overall fuel efficiency figure to go up by around 1.8kmpl.

It is also expected that your findings vary from ours as fuel efficiency varies with respect to driving conditions, car condition and driver behaviour too. If you’re an existing Fortuner diesel owner, do share your findings in the comments section below.

From my Fortuner 4x4 AT, I was able to squeeze 15.8 km/l over a distance of 670 kms (from Chennai to Kochi).

My experience with Fortuner has been disappointing in all respects. ...steering wovell in the first year itself...not once but thrice ...flywheel damaged...clutch damaged...first year. ..windscreen damaged by one small pebble from truck going ahead . Not once but twice replaced...all this in first year...without any off road drive...driven only on expressway. ..quality of parts inferior....regretting having opted for Toyota Fortuner as against Ford's Endeavour....Toyota is now cashing in on name....I lodged complaint with Toyota at all levels but they didnt even bother....for me Fortuner is junk
