While most popular Indian cars continue recording dismal performances in the Global NCAP’s safety tests there is a slight bright side to look forward to as well. Quite a few mass-market cars have managed to get decent scores while only one has gone on to achieve the top honours as well. Here are the ones made in India that scored the highest marks in GNCAP’s stringent tests.

It must be noted that GNCAP usually takes the base variants of the subject car with maximum crash test speeds reaching upto 64kmph.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga: 3 Stars

Body shell integrity: Unstable

The Ertiga secured a decent three stars for adult as well as child occupant safety but its body shell integrity was rated as unstable. This variant was equipped with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, front seatbelt reminders and ISOFIX as standard.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis: 3 Stars

The made-in-India Ignis tested is sold in the African market. It managed to get a three-star rating for adult occupant but despite ISOFIX availability, it got only one star for child occupant protection. Toyota Etios: 4 Stars

Honda Amaze: 4 Stars

Honda’s sub-compact sedan received a healthy four-star rating for adult safety but came out miserably low for child safety at just one star. The model tested had dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX, front seatbelt with pre-tensioners and seatbelt reminder for the driver.

Maruti Vitara Brezza: 4 Stars

The Vitara Brezza not only outscores the two Maruti cars above it but also walked away with a stable body shell after the crash test. This model received four stars in adult and two for child safety. Maruti offers dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, ISOFIX anchorages, front seatbelts with pretensioners and driver seatbelt reminder with the Vitara Brezza.

Mahindra Marazzo: 4 Stars

Another MPV making it to the list is the Marazzo that received four stars for adult safety and two for the child occupant. Mahindra offers standard dual front airbags, ISOFIX anchors, ABS, front seatbelt pretensioners and seatbelt reminder for the driver.

Tata Nexon: 5 Stars

This is it. After scoring four stars, the Tata Nexon underwent a second attempt and came out with the scroll of honour of scoring the highest among these Indian-made cars. It received five stars for adult and three for child occupant safety.
