Tesla removes Autopilot feature amidst Criticism

Tesla has restricted the autopilot feature for its Model S. The American auto giant, known for its out of the box approach, announces this at a time when experts suggested that the feature is not fully safe. Tesla said that it is bringing off the feature to update and remove the glitches associated with it right now.

The company launched the feature in October 2015 and Elon Musk, CEO for the company, said at the onset that it is still in the developing stage. He warned the drivers not to go “hands-off” as the carmaker is yet to declare it 100% safe. The company was thus, criticised to launch the attribute too early. It added that the function will now be restricted on residential roads or roads without a center divider, meaning that the car cannot drive faster than a maximum of the speed limit plus five miles per hour.

Model S uses modern equipment like, radar, GPS, camera and mapping functions to detect the path on road. The problem currently arising is that when the roads are not marked clearly, camera misses the lines and thus can result in accidents. Model S has a maximum 5-star safety rating from the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP). Tesla has emerged as the stalwart in battery cars and is known for its focus on security. Some time back, the automaker recalled every model of S over a small issue of seat belts which could be fixed within a span of 30 minutes.
