The 6-speed torque converter is also used in other Volkswagen Group cars such as the Polo GT and Vento

  • The automatic variants will use the same 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that makes 110PS/175Nm.

  • Rapid AT will be available in all variants except for the base Rider.

  • All other cars in the segment such as the Honda City, Toyota Yaris, Maruti Ciaz and Hyundai Verna offer an automatic.

  • We expect a premium of Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh for the automatic variants.

The Rapid 1.0 TSI was launched a few months back but at the time, Skoda only revealed the prices of the manual version. The automatic was expected to be offered in the coming months and its launch has now been confirmed for September 17.

Under the bonnet, the automatic variants of the Rapid will use the same 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that makes 110PS/175Nm in the manual Rapid. Sadly, the 7-speed DSG is no longer on offer, but even previously, it was only offered with the diesel Rapid which is no longer on sale. The previously offered 1.6-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine was offered with a 6-speed torque converter.

As far as the variant list is concerned, the automatic Rapid will be available in all variants, except for the base Rider. So you can have the two-pedal setup in the Rider Plus, Ambition, Onyx, Style or the Monte Carlo variant of the Rapid.

In the compact sedan segment where the Rapid competes, the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Toyota Yaris and Maruti Ciaz are all offered with a petrol-automatic. However, with the Rapid being offered with an automatic gearbox from the Rider Plus variant onwards, it could become the least expensive automatic option in the segment.

When it comes to pricing over its manual counterpart, this powertrain combo is used by other cars in the Volkswagen family as well, where it comes at a premium of Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh. We expect a similar pricing here as well. If you exclude the Rider variant which will not be getting the automatic transmission, the Rapid manual is priced between Rs 7.99 lakh and Rs 11.79 lakh (ex-showroom India).
