While the third-gen i20 is slated for a November 5 launch, Hyundai has now revealed the variant-wise engine options as it opens pre-launch bookings for the third-gen hatchback. Official pre-launch bookings are underway for a token amount of Rs 21,000. With the third-gen model, Hyundai has dropped the ‘Elite’ tag and it will once again be known as just i20.

Unlike the second-gen model that was offered in three variants towards the end of its lifecycle [Magna+, Sportz+ and Asta (O)], the new i20 will be available in four: Magna, Sportz, Asta and Asta (O).

The new i20 will be offered with the same engines as the Venue. Here’s a look at the variant-wise engine and gearbox options:

  • A 5-speed MT gearbox will come as standard on all 1.2-litre petrol variants of the hatchback.

  • Hyundai will only be offering the petrol variants of the new i20 with an automatic gearbox option.

  • In case you wish to have a petrol variant with the CVT or 6-speed iMT (intelligent manual transmission) clutchless manual gearbox, your only options are the second-to-base Sportz or the second-to-top Asta.

  • The second-to-top Asta petrol variant offers a maximum of four transmission options.

  • For those planning to buy the new i20 with the 7-speed DCT (dual-clutch transmission), it will come with only the second-to-top Asta and the fully-loaded Asta (O) variants.

  • Hyundai won’t be offering the base-spec Magna petrol variant with an automatic gearbox.

  • The 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine will not be offered with a proper manual transmission and will only get the option of an iMT (clutchless manual) or DCT, unlike the Venue.

  • The diesel engine, on the other hand, will be available only with a 6-speed MT.

  • Only the base-spec Magna, second-to-base Sportz and top-spec Asta (O) variants will get the diesel engine.

On the features front, it will come equipped with a sunroof, LED headlamps, semi-digital instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and connected car tech. Safety features will likely include six airbags, electronic stability control, and rear parking sensors.
