Mahindra contemplating new compact SUVs and MPVs

India's leading UV maker, Mahindra & Mahindra, is aiming to further enhance its market share in the competitive Utility vehicle segment. The company is planning to introduce three to four new soft-roaders in the coming future. Moreover, it is also aiming to introduce a new family of multipurpose vehicles.

Despite being a sluggish market, soft-roaders likes Renault Duster and the Ford EcoSport have been doing tremendous business for their respective makers. Moreover, the sub-4 metre compact SUV segment is the one which has been witnessing a consistent positive growth. These cars are basically designed for city driving and directly targets the urban buyers of the country. Mahindra is also contemplate to mark its presence in this segment by introducing new models. Not just Mahindra, carmakers like Honda, Hyundai, Fiat, Toyota, Nissan and Maruti Suzuki have already announced that they will soon introduce their compact SUVs in the market.

According to a report published on ET, Mahindra has already started developing a new family of multi-purpose vehicles. These new models will have an all-new design language. The company is also planning to develop an MPV, which will be based on the SsangYong X100 platform. It will compete against the likes of Maruti Ertiga, Chevrolet Enjoy, Honda Mobilio and Datsun Go+ MPV. If media reports to be believed, Mahindra is also making a new Xylo and a new MPV based on the W201 platform, which is likely to be launched in 2015-16.

Mahindra will launch two compact SUVs in next couple of years. Codenamed as S101 and S102, the compact SUVs are being developed on all-new platforms. These are expected to be priced between Rs. 4.5 lakh to Rs. 8.5 lakh. Moreover, the company is also considering a new rugged SUV, codenamed as U301, which will make its debut in the next two years.
