Hyundai Verna Turbo-Petrol Fuel Efficiency Tested: Claimed vs Real

The Hyundai Verna turbo-petrol has a claimed fuel efficiency of 19.2kmpl but can it deliver in the real world?

Hyundai launched the facelifted Verna with three new engine options including a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol unit, offered only in the range-topping SX(O) variant. It is the same unit that is offered on the turbo variant of the Venue where its output figures stand at 120PS and 172Nm. The Verna Turbo only comes with a 7-speed DCT (dual-clutch transmission) gearbox. We recently tested this turbocharged variant of the sedan for fuel efficiency and here’s what the numbers have to say:

Tested Fuel Efficiency (city)	12.25kmpl
Tested Fuel Efficiency (highway)	18.04kmpl

As per our test, the Verna Turbo couldn’t match its claimed figure in the city or on the highway. Its fuel efficiency on the highway was less than the claimed figure by over 1kmpl.

Now let’s take a look at how it faired in mixed driving conditions:

If you use the sedan majorly in the cities, the Verna Turbo will return an average fuel efficiency of 13kmpl. On the other hand, if it is used mainly on wide stretches of roads and highways, the fuel efficiency will go up by almost 3kmpl. When the Hyundai sedan is driven equally in the city and on the highway, expect the fuel-efficiency figure to hover around 14kmpl.
