The second-gen XUV500 is expected to be equipped with premium features such as flush-sitting door handles, a larger touchscreen and a digital instrument cluster

  • The instrument cluster and touchscreen are housed in one single panel like the Kia Seltos.

  • The new XUV500 is likely to get a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system from the Ssangyong Korando.

  • Apart from AC controls, there seems to be an absence of physical buttons.

  • It is expected to get new 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines.

  • We expect Mahindra to launch it in the second half of 2020.

  • Ford too will introduce an SUV based on the second-gen XUV500 with unique styling.

  • We expect prices to remain similar to the current XUV500.

Mahindra is currently working on the second-gen XUV500, and it has been caught on camera a few times, too! While the test mule was covered in camouflage, we were able to extract a few details about its interior from the latest spy images.

For starters, the layout of the instrument cluster and the touchscreen reminds one of the Kia Seltos. The prototype of the new-gen XUV500 features an instrument cluster whose panel extends towards the centre of the dashboard and houses the touchscreen inside it as well.

The instrument cluster could be an all-digital affair as well, like it is in the new-gen Ssangyong Korando. Moreover, the touchscreen is also expected to be borrowed from the Korando and is likely to be a 9-inch unit.  So far, the MG Hector with its 10.4-inch display offers the biggest screen in an SUV in Rs 10 lakh to 20 lakh price bracket followed by Kia Seltos with a 10.25-inch unit.

The AC vents are positioned below the touchscreen with their controls sitting below that. Apart from the AC controls, not a lot of physical buttons are visible on the centre console, which leads us to believe that like MG Hector, most of the controls of the new-gen XUV500 will be housed within the infotainment system.

A flat-bottom steering wheel was also present on the test mule that was spotted. Apart from that, the interior of the XUV500 looks minimalistic and modern compared to the current XUV500, which features a lot of buttons on the dashboard that make it look cluttered

We are also happy to report that the flush-sitting door handles that were spotted on the last set of spy shots are still there. Safe to say, there are high chances of them making it to production.

On the engine front, we expect Mahindra to offer the 2020XUV500 with a new set of 2.0-litre petrol and diesel BS6-compliant engines. Mahindra has not revealed a timeline for its launch yet, but we expect it to break cover sometime in the second half of 2020.

We expect prices to remain similar to that of the current XUV500 (Rs 12.22 lakh to Rs 18.55 lakh ex-showroom Mumbai). Once it is launched, it will go up against the upcoming seven versions of the Tata Harrier, called Gravitas, and the MG Hector. The new Ford SUV that will be built on the second-gen XUV500’s platform will also be a rival.
