After teasing some images, Land Rover finally unveiled the fourth member of the Range Rover family, the Velar, on March 1. The ‘Velar’ name is derived from the Latin word ‘velare,’ which means ‘to veil or cover.’ The Velar is based on the same platform as the Jaguar F-Pace and slots in between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport. It is likely to be introduced in the Indian market sometime next year and will be priced around the Rs 80 lakh mark. Let's have a look at some interesting things this new SUV has to offer.

1) Styling

The Velar does strike as a Range Rover on the first glance itself. It has a coupe-inspired design and, with a drag coefficient of 0.32, it is the most aerodynamic Land Rover ever produced. The new SUV is based on the iQ-AI platform which comprises of about 81 per cent aluminium and thus helps to keep the weight under control. It has a high-mounted honey-mesh grille and swept-back full-LED signature Range Rover headlamps. It also has LED daytime-running lamps, LED taillamps and flush-fitting door handles that pop out of the doors. It features 22-inch alloy wheels; however, the Indian spec is likely to ride on 18/19-inch wheels.

2) Powertrain

The Velar is being offered with six engine options from both petrol and diesel. However, all of them are coupled to a ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox which sends power to all four wheels through Land Rover's Terrain Response system. The engines which are likely to be offered in the Indian-spec SUV are the 180PS, 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel, and the 300PS, 3.0-litre V6 diesel.

3) Loaded With Features

Land Rover has left no stone unturned in this department. All kinds of features you that can expect from a mid-size luxury SUV are present in the Velar. It gets two 10-inch touchscreens, one on the dashboard for infotainment and navigation and the other in the centre console through which you can control the air-con and the terrain response settings. The SUV has a smartphone application through which you can unlock the car remotely from anywhere in the world. You can also lock/unlock the vehicle, check fuel level, start up the climate control and know the location of the SUV through the app. It also features a 12.5-inch full digital instrument cluster, 23-speaker 1600W Meridian audio system, and two 8-inch screens for the rear passengers.

4) Lots of comfort

The Velar has air suspension on offer and its seats are electronically adjustable in 20 ways. The seats can also be cooled and heated. While the front armrest splits in half and can be individually adjusted, the rear seats have a 40:20:40 split folding option. It also offers an activity key that can be worn as a wristband and a hands-free boot release. We are still not sure which of these features will be carried over on the Indian version, however the top spec is likely to get some of these.
